Wamego falls to Miege in 4A Championship 35-14

A 4th and goal from the 2 stop by the Bishop Miege defense midway through the 3rd quarter ended Wamego’s best threat after halftime as the Stags won their seventh state title in the past 10 years Saturday, 35-14.

The Red Raiders had scored on an 11 yard throw from Colin Donahue to Hagen Johnson with 49 seconds remaining in the 2nd quarter, capping a wild stretch that saw the teams combine to score 35 points after a scoreless first. The TD pass cut Miege’s lead to 21-14 with Wamego receiving the second half kickoff.

Miege’s defense was able to crack the code as Hayden Oviatt took the handoff on the 4th and goal play, driving him backwards. Three snaps later, Mac Armstrong found Teryn Jackson on the Wamego sideline at the 30 and the receiver did the rest to score a 93 yard TD that built the lead back to two touchdowns for Miege at 28-14.

Armstrong threw for three scores and cleared the 3,700 yard mark throwing for the season by leading the Stags to the most yards gained against Wamego’s defense all season. Two runs by David Garcia accounted for the other scores.

Oviatt had scored Wamego’s first TD of the day with a 43 yard trot with 8:53 to play before halftime.

The loss was the first of the season for the Red Raiders, who were playing in their first ever state title game. They finished the year 12-1.

Bishop Miege won its first title since a six-year run of consecutive crowns ended in 2019, finishing the season 11-2.
