    The following summary of calls for service/reports filed by the Riley County Police Department is a portion of those received by police. Some names, addresses, and case details are withheld to follow local, state, and federal law and in an attempt to protect community members from being victimized further. Those arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

    MANHATTAN, KAN. – 

    Officers filed a report for battery on LEO in the 1000 block of S. Seth Child Rd. in Manhattan on January 19, 2023, around 11:15 a.m. A 25-year-old male Corrections Officer was listed as the victim when it was reported an already confined 61-year-old male inmate spit in his face. Russell Springer, 61, of Manhattan was arrested in connection for battery on LEO. This arrest holds a bond of $25,000 bringing his total bond to $44,500.

    Officers filed a report for theft in the 2100 block of Lawrence Rd. in Manhattan on January 19, 2023, around 4:30 p.m. A 37-year-old man was listed as the victim when he reported $12,000 – $15,000 worth of ammunition was stolen while his possessions were being moved by a moving company from Georgia to Manhattan. Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

    Officers filed a report for theft in the 100 block of Manhattan Town Center in Manhattan on January 19, 2023, around 5:45 p.m. JCPenny was listed as the victim when it was reported a man stole a 10k white gold 2-carat diamond ring from the store. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $6,250. Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

    Officers responded to the report of shots fired in the 2500 block of Brook Ln. in Manhattan on January 20, 2023, around 3:15 a.m. A 26-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man reported a 48-year-old man tried to forcibly enter the front door of their home, then shot multiple rounds from a pistol into unoccupied parked cars in the area. No injuries were reported. Bradley Smith, 48, of Manhattan was quickly identified as the suspect and arrested. Smith’s charges and bond are still pending at the time of this report.
