Local officials say the ongoing Burklund/Axtelton wildfire in northern Riley and Pottawatomie County is about 90% contained.

In a statement late Tuesday, Riley County Public Information Officer Vivienne Leyva noted that Pottawatomie County has released all mutual aid crews. On the Riley County side, crews from both counties, Kansas Forest Service, the Kansas City Kansas Wildland Task Force, Pittsburg and Garden City remained on scene monitoring fire conditions. No aerial support was needed on Tuesday.

Officials say that residents can expect to see smoke and even flames in the burned areas for at least a few more days. All roads that were closed because of the fire have since reopened.

During KMAN’s In Focus Tuesday, Riley County Commission Chair John Ford thanked officials for their hard work over the past few days.

Several thousand acres of land have burned since the fire broke out last Friday, destroying one home and damaging a few other structures. No injuries or loss of livestock have been reported in either county.
