Kansas State University’s College of Agriculture will take the next step in ongoing facilities upgrades with a special ceremony this Friday. The college will break ground on a new Animal Science Arena that will replace Weber Arena. Dean Ernie Minton says the arena will become the new home of the K-State Rodeo. In addition, the college will have further opportunities to have more youth and other competition events throughout the year. The Manhattan City Commission will hold a special session on Tuesday night at City Hall. On the agenda are two major items headlined by a second reading of the amended tax increment financing plan for Back 9 Development’s Midtown Aggieville project. Commissioners unanimously approved the amended TIF plan on first reading last week. The commission will then discuss the 2024 state legislative program before finally receiving a city manager update from city manager Ron Fehr. The Junction City Animal Shelter announced that a feline that had been in their shelter tested positive for tularemia which is commonly known as rabbit fever. The shelter received the cat from the Junction City Police Department on Nov. 19 after they were dispatched to a call regarding the cat being injured. After testing done by K-State, the shelter received the test results back on Dec. 7 and reached out to individuals who may have come in close contact with the cat as well as the Geary County Health Department and Kansas Department of Health (KHDE). In Washington, the US Congress is still battling over the funding of the overall government for the 2024 fiscal year. In a divided government with Republicans controlling the US House and the Democrats controlling the US Senate both by a narrow margins, debates continue to be contentious over funding particularly for the US military. A recent blockade on military promotions by Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama was recently dropped allowing for the promotion of hundreds of military personnel to higher positions. In a statement on Wednesday night from K-State athletics director Gene Taylor, it has been announced that K-State forward Nae’Qwan Tomlin will not return to the K-State men’s basketball program. The decision comes following days of controversy between the athletics department and President Richard Linton, who released a statement earlier Wednesday to Vince Loveringe of WIBW that said “there is a serious misconduct university policy in place in compliance with NCAA. A Manhattan woman was arrested early Tuesday morning for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. 33-year-old Sara McDonald of Manhattan was arrested just before 8:45 am in the 800 block of Bertrand Street on one count of driving under the influence and for being incapable of driving safely with a child present in the vehicle. She is also charged with one count of aggrevated endangering a child under the age of 18. McDonald was booked into Riley County Jail and later released on a $8,000 bond.

The Manhattan City Commission unanimously supported an amended tax increment financing plan on first reading Tuesday for the Midtown Aggieville development project. The decision clears the way to help fund a hotel and a private parking garage for the initially proposed multimillion dollar project that Back 9 Development is planning in Aggieville. Commissioner Wynn Butler supported the amended TIF plan and cleared any confusion citizens had over the proposed amendment towards the parking garage in comparison to the long term funding plan for Back 9 Development. The St. Thomas More Catholic Church Ladies held their 33rd annual Cookie Carousel on Saturday. The event, which happened in the main gymnasium at the church and saw several pounds of cookies and other treats sold, all in the name of charity. Co-Chair Joan Krush spoke about the event. Krush says that money raised from the event will mainly go towards Good Shepherd Homecare and Hospice. Residents who attended Saturday’s event also had a choice of selecting another community organization to support.
