Local official weighs in on Congress battle over NDAA

In Washington, the US Congress is still battling over the funding of the overall government for the 2024 fiscal year.
In a divided government with Republicans controlling the US House and the Democrats controlling the US Senate both by a narrow margins, debates continue to be contentious over funding particularly for the US military.
A recent blockade on military promotions by Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama was recently dropped allowing for the promotion of hundreds of military personnel to higher positions. Retired General Perry Wiggins, the Executive Director of Gov. Laura Kelly’s Military Council, spoke about this during KMAN’s In Focus Thursday.

Wiggins also discussed the importance of Congress of fully funding the military and not using a CR (continuing resolution) to fund the military.

Wiggins said that the passage of a full package funding the military could also help with the military’s biggest issue – recruiting – which has been issue since the pandemic.

A continuing resolution is a temporary spending bill that keeps the government open for a certain amount of days until a full spending bill is passed. Congress recently passed a CR that will keep the government open until Jan. 19 while Congress continues to debate over spending for the upcoming fiscal year.
