Amid a slew of other tailgates, one tailgate will be raising awareness about mental health as well as raising funds. Carl’s Cause along with K-State Counseling Services and the Wildcat Wellness Coalition organized the tailgate in memory of K-State graduate Carl Sprecht. Carl Sprecht was diagnosed with bipolar disorder while attending K-State before taking his own life in 2017. Saturday would have been his 29th birthday. The 23rd annual Cats for Cans food drive will be taking place during tomorrow’s game. The drive is organized by the K-State Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. They’ll be accepting donations of canned food or cash starting at 9 a.m. in the Bill Snyder Family Stadium parking lot and at all stadium entrances. This year’s goal is to raise $5,000 pounds in food and $12,000 dollars in cash donations. All donations go to the Flint Hills Breadbasket in an effort to fight hunger in Manhattan. OLATHE — Two men have been charged in a string of suburban Kansas City robberies that led to one of the suspects exchanging gunfire with an officer. The Kansas City Star reports that 23-year-old Pedro Antonio Torres and 18-year-old Mario Jimenez were charged Wednesday with five counts of aggravated robbery. Jimenez also was charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. Torres had an additional felony theft charge. Their attorneys didn’t immediately return phone messages. WICHITA — Officials for a Wichita school are raising concerns that trains are stalled for so long on nearby tracks that students are crawling under boxcars and across the couplings to get home. The Wichita Eagle reports that Hamilton Middle School principal Justin Kasel says trains traveling just north of the school sometimes are stopped for up to an hour, tying up traffic. More than two-thirds of Hamilton’s 600 students don’t qualify for a bus, so they either walk or get rides. TOPEKA — Topeka police are searching for a man who exchanged gunfire with officers before fleeing on foot. Police Lt. Andrew Beightel says the shots were fired as officers were responding early Thursday to a report of a suspicious person in south-central Topeka. There were no immediate reports of injuries. Beightel says officers were on assignment to address vehicle burglaries in the area when one officer saw a person carrying a baseball bat and backpack. LAWRENCE — Two friends who were convicted of a fatal shooting at a Lawrence motel will serve different sentences. Twenty-year-old Tyrone Carvin was sentenced Wednesday to more than 23 years in prison, while 23-year-old Ramone Singleton was given about 10 years. Both men, from Kansas City, Kansas, were convicted of voluntary manslaughter and other charges in the September 2017 shooting of 23-year-old Cameron Hooks, of Lenexa, and the wounding of two other men.
