LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas is paying a former student-athlete $40,000 to settle a lawsuit claiming she became ill because of mold in the vents of her dormitory room. The Lawrence Journal-World report s the university denies the claims but agreed to pay Laine Evans $20,000 and her attorneys $20,000 to settle the lawsuit. The agreement released Tuesday says the university and Evans used mediation in the case to avoid the expense and uncertainty of litigation. The Director of the Ogden Friendship House of Hope is retiring and a ceremony is planned in the community to send her off. For more than 30 years, the Friendship House has helped the at-risk community of Ogden by providing assistance and guidance to those in need. Officers responded to the report of an injury accident near K-82 and Timber Creek Rd in Riley County on June 5, 2019, at approximately 2:10 PM. When officers arrived on scene, they found a Red Ford F150 driven by Jennifer Hicks, 33, of Clay Center, had crashed. Hicks and three passengers were transported for treatment of their injuries. Kevin Robinson, 26, of Manhattan was arrested while at the Riley County Police Department on June 5, 2019, at approximately 10:55 PM. A man died after suffering an apparent medical episode driving on Tuttle Creek Boulevard Wednesday. The 56-year-old driver was not identified in a release by Riley County police. He was driving a 2018 Ford Escape when he left the roadway and crashed into a pole near mile marker 303, south of Madison Road on TCB in the 10 o’clock hour. The man was transported to Via Christi hospital where he was declared dead. The cause is still under investigation.
Manhattan residents will vote in November whether to increase sales tax by 0.3 percent. The Manhattan City Commission voted unanimously to send the question to the public at its Tuesday meeting. Such an increase would bring Manhattan’s sales tax rate from 8.95 percent to 9.25 percent, sending the city into the top 10 of 25 total first class cities in terms of sales tax. Those areas with self-imposed sales tax increases such as transportation development districts or community improvement districts would have varying higher rates.
