The Manhattan City Commission met for their bimonthly legislative meeting at City Hall Tuesday night. Top among agenda items was a proposal to rezone a five-block area of the city to allow for development of high density residential buildings. “It has the potential into a more populous and vibrant place, using existing infrastructure efficiently and reducing sprawl,” said Manhattan Senior Planner John Adam, who presented the proposal. The rezoning would run between Manhattan Boulevard and 12th Street from Ratone to Vattier. The secretary of the U.S. Army will visit Fort Riley Friday, meeting with 1st Infantry Division leaders and interacting with Big Red One soldiers, according to a press release from the army post. Mark T. Esper, the 23rd secretary of the U.S. Army, was sworn in on Nov. 17, 2017. As secretary, he has statutory responsibility for all matters relating to the U.S. Army, to include the recruitment, organization, training, equipping and care of 1.4 million active duty, National Guard and Reserve soldiers, Department of the Army civilians and their families. MAPLE HILL — Authorities say a Kansas man was struck by a train and killed while struggling with a trailer that had detached from his pickup truck at a railroad crossing. The Kansas Highway Patrol identified the victim as 58-year-old David Miller, of Maple Hill. The patrol says Miller got out of the truck to try to rehitch the trailer. He was trying to get back into the pickup when a Union Pacific train came around the curve Friday night in Wabaunsee County. Miller was pronounced dead at the scene. No one aboard the train was hurt.

TOPEKA — The Kansas Senate has approved budget legislation that would restore some past spending cuts for the state’s higher education system. The vote Monday was 28-12 on a bill adding $47 million in new spending to the state’s current budget and the one for the next fiscal year that begins in July. Both annual budgets total more than $16 billion. The bill includes $18 million for state universities to reverse cuts made in their operating budgets in 2016. The measure goes next to the House. Riley County commissioners decided Monday morning to terminate ambulance services to Pottawatomie County effective June 1, unless a new agreement can be made for services. Both Riley and Pottawatomie commissions decided to do their own billing for ambulance services after Via Christi informed both governments in April 2017 that it would be substantially hiking fees for administrative services. Since, Riley County has been billing Pottawatomie County nearly $10,000 per month since November for calls made from Pottawatomie County, including the growing Blue Township area that shoulders Manhattan city limits. Riley commissioners say no payments from Pottawatomie County have been made.…

Riley County fire crews were busy with an early morning blaze near Keats Monday just before 5 a.m., according to a press release from Riley County Fire Chief Pat Collins. Volunteers from Keats, Riley, Randolph, Konza Valley and Hunters Island stations were called for a structure fire. It was reported that a detached garage was fully engulfed. Keats, (Station 4) arrived first and knocked down the fire and put out the adjoining house fire until other units arrived on scene.
