A 23-year-old man was arrested yesterday.  Joseph Brand of Manhattan was arrested on the offenses of possession of opiates, opium, or narcotic drugs and interference with law enforcement which gave him a bond of $5,000.00  This arrest stemmed from a warrant issued in Riley County. A report for theft of property was filed yesterday in the 100 block of Barton Road in Leonardville. Listed as a victim was Farm Bureau in Manhattan and Stacy Wurtz, 31, of Riley. E-cigarette smokers in Manhattan may soon be pushed outdoors as the result of a new ordinance being considered by the city commission. At Tuesday’s city commission work session Jared Wasinger, management assistant, gave the audience a general idea of what an e-cigarette ban would look like. In 2008 Manhattan was the first community in Kansas to ban cigarettes in public buildings. Since then Kansas has issued its’ own cigarette ban, and Wasinger said an e-tobacco ban would look largely the same. EDGERTON — A 32-year-old Kansas man has pleaded no contest in the death of a bar patron who was struck in the head with a pool cue a week before Christmas. WDAF-TV reports Gregory Cooper of Edgerton was charged with second-degree murder and attempted aggravated battery in the death of 23-year-old Tyler Knudsen at an Edgerton bar on Dec. 19. Johnson County prosecutors said Cooper “unintentionally, but recklessly” killed Knudsen when he swung a pool cue at another man’s head but instead hit the victim. TOPEKA — A former Kansas House candidate has asked the state Supreme Court to order a county’s judges to convene a grand jury to investigate Secretary of State Kris Kobach. Democrat Steven Davis of Lawrence filed his request last week after Douglas County’s chief judge rejected Davis’ petition for a grand jury. Davis wants the grand jury to investigate whether the Republican secretary of state or his subordinates mishandled online voter registrations. Davis circulated petitions after hearing anecdotes about potential problems, but even some of Kobach’s toughest critics haven’t seen evidence of wrongdoing. An Oklahoma man wanted for two counts of murder in Oklahoma was arrested by Riley County police Monday in Manhattan. 21 year old Jamar Simms of Spencer, Oklahoma, was taken into custody in the 1600 block of Charles Place at 10:30 a.m. Monday. Oklahoma City Police Public Information Officer Sgt. Gary Knight shared information with K-MAN regarding February third homicides Simms is being charged with. Kansas State University has nominated three students for Rhodes and Marshall scholarships. The three students are Patrick Kenney, a senior in philosophy, Ronald Leo Sullivan Jr, a senior in international agribusiness, and Caitlyn Webb, a senior in economics and accounting. The Rhodes Scholarship is awarded to 32 students nationwide to fund two years of postgraduate study at Oxford University in England. Marshall scholarships are awarded to 40 students around the nation and fund either one or two years at most universities in the United Kingdom.
