While much of Monday’s Pottawatomie County Commission meeting dealt with refunding bonds on county projects and hearings for sewer, streets, and water assessments on several development projects–the group also received updates on public works projects. Riley County’s GIS (Geographic Information System) department showed off some new hardware at Monday morning’s county commission meeting, and it wasn’t the type of hardware one installs in a computer. Department director Kevin Howser told commissioners Riley County was honored at the Annual User Conference in San Diego, Cali., in late June. Esri, a world leader in geographic information system (GIS) technology, presented Riley County with a Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) Award at the conference. KANSAS CITY — Officials are investigating the death of a young Kansas boy on a water slide that is billed as the world’s largest. Authorities and family members say 10-year-old Caleb Thomas Schwab died Sunday at Schlitterbahn Waterpark in Kansas City, Kansas. Schwab was the son of state Rep. Scott Schwab. Schlitterbahn spokeswoman Winter Prosapio says the boy died on one of the park’s main attractions, Verruckt, a 168-foot-tall water slide that has 264 stairs leading to the top. A 19-year-old defendant pleaded guilty Monday to a charge of involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of a 16-year-old boy on Fort Riley, Acting U.S. Attorney Tom Beall said.   Juwuan D. Jackson, 19, who lived on the Fort Riley base at the time, pleaded guilty to one count of involuntary manslaughter. Seth Lightfoot, 22, of Blaine, Kansas was arrested on Saturday August 6 at approximately 1:50 AM while in the 1900 block of Tuttle Creek Blvd. Lightfoot was arrested on the offenses of distribution of methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of marijuana. He was also arrested on the offenses of possession of drug paraphernalia and a warrant for failure to appear. HUTCHINSON — A 19-year-old man has been sentenced to probation for growing psychedelic mushrooms at a Hutchinson business. A Reno County judge on Friday sentenced Carlyeon Moore to three years of probation. He faces 18 years in prison if he violates the probation. District Judge Trish Rose agreed to depart from state sentencing guidelines in granting the probation after an agreement between attorneys in the case. The Hutchinson News reports officers in March 2015 found the mushroom growing operation in a back room at the business, which wasn’t identified. Police said there were about six dozen growing mushrooms and other equipment.

The 3rd Annual Rhythm & Brews Festival was held over the weekend and event organizers said they saw growth. “The first year in 2014 we had about 100 people,” said Marcia Rozell of the Manhattan Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. “Last year we had 220 and this year we’re almost at 300.” There were nine breweries, distillers and wineries from the Manhattan area and across the state inside the GTM Family Center at City Park where participants could sample the various concoctions. Five Utah residents, including two who had qualified for the AMA Amateur National Motorcross Championship,  were transported to Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan after a Sunday morning car accident in Riley County. The accident occurred shortly after 5:30 a.m. when a 2005 Volvo pulling an enclosed race car trailer hydroplaned then lost control on the right shoulder of I-70 eastbound. The vehicle and trailer rolled then came to a rest on its’ wheels in the north ditch. Kansas Highway Patrol responded to the accident at mile marker 320, and the five occupants of the vehicle had sustained injuries in the accident. The report…
