WICHITA — The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is investigating a fire at a Wichita restaurant run by a Middle Eastern family. The Petra Mediterranean Restaurant was destroyed Wednesday and its owners say the fire might have been a hate crime. The words “Go back” were painted on a storage unit behind the restaurant. The Wichita Eagle reports the FBI, which investigates hate crimes, has been notified. The ATF says it is trying to determine if the FBI should be more involved in the investigation. TOPEKA — Former Pittsburg entrepreneur Gene Bicknell is suing Kansas over a $42 million tax bill stemming from the sale of hundreds of Pizza Hut franchises. The lawsuit filed Wednesday is the latest twist in a long-running dispute between the state and Bicknell, who once owned the most Pizza Hut franchises in the country. The Kansas Department of Revenue audited his tax returns from 2005 to 2008 and ordered him to pay $42 million in taxes on the sale of the franchises. Riley County Police are reporting on social media Friday morning their 911 center & K-State’s center are getting back-to-back phone calls with third party information about a planned “shooting in the Ville this weekend.” At this point, nothing credible has been found. According to a facebook post all information RCPD has received has been third party information, with the first report of such a social media post Thursday. Updated Friday: GREENWOOD – Attorneys are not saying why a Mississippi judge declared a mistrial in the case of a man charged with killing his wife. Edward Broom was arrested in January 2016 in Manhattan, Kansas, where he had moved after his wife, Lakeyla Broom, was killed in the couple’s home in Greenwood, Mississippi, in September 2014. The Greenwood Commonwealth reported the mistrial was declared Wednesday. Kansas State University President Richard B Meyers has issued a statement on the recent racist vandalism that occurred on Wednesday Myers says that he wanted to make sure his message to the student leadership is clear.  His message is to ensure the safety of those affected by the attack. Two men were arrested Wednesday night in connection with a rape that occurred in Geary County last week. Geary County Sheriff’s Detectives and Fort Riley Criminal Investigations Division, located a vehicle believed to belong to the suspects.  Further investigation led to the arrest of Wayne Harry Harris, 20, of Fort Riley, and  Corey Lee Horman, 20, also of Fort Riley. Both suspects are currently being held in the Geary County Detention Center and being held without bond for rape, kidnapping, and conspiracy to commit rape. A Wamego woman was killed Wednesday morning following a collision on I-70 in Junction City near Washington Street, according to the Junction City Police Department. Officers located a 2007 Mini Cooper, driven by 23-year-old Jacey Cantrell, in the ditch on the eastbound side of I-70 just after 7 a.m. Cantrell was entrapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated by Junction City Fire. Cantrell was transported to Geary Community Hospital where she was pronounced deceased a short time later.
