Riley County commissioners continued discussions Monday morning on negotiations with the City of Manhattan that could see the county’s emergency medical services potentially sharing space with the Manhattan Fire Department headquarters on Kimball and Denison. The county would like to move emergency medical services to the building with infrastructure improvements. The proposed 50-year lease agreement would require the county to make rent payments to the city for 15 years. The county would then be rent-free for the rest of the lease. Just last week KMAN reported on bid openings for a couple of subdivision infrastructure projects–and this week recommendations were approved by Pottawatomie County Commissioners. Commissioners unanimously said yes to bids on the Falling Leaf Unit Two and Whispering Meadows Unit 4 infrastructure projects. Larson Construction was awarded the bid for Falling Leaf’s sewer work for $345,380.70. J&K Contracting was selected for Whispering Meadow’s sewer, water, streets and storm water work, for $725,105,45. Riley County Police are looking for a Manhattan man after he failed to show up in Riley County Court, Monday afternoon. Richard Smith was set to be arraigned on felony gun charges when his attorney, Gary West told Judge Meryl Wilson “I have not a clue where he is.” West went on to say that Smith has had no trouble showing up for court in the past. KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Kansas City, Kansas, police say one of the department’s detectives was shot and wounded near the Kansas Speedway by a suspect who later fled the scene. Police Chief Terry Ziegler says the shooting took place about 12:30 p.m. Monday. Ziegler says the detective later was in surgery, though his medical status was not immediately clear. It was not immediately clear what led to the shooting. The FBI and the Missouri State Highway Patrol say they are assisting in the investigation, though they deferred questions about the matter to Kansas City, Kansas, police. On May 5 at approximately 9:19 p.m., officers and emergency crews responded to 517 Stone Drive in Manhattan for a report of an infant not breathing. After arriving, emergency crews confirmed the infant was not breathing and began resuscitation efforts. Unfortunately, the infant was later pronounced deceased at Via Christi Hospital. On May 7 at approximately 7 p.m. Andrew L. Gibson, 25, of 517 Stone Drive was placed under arrest for Murder in the 1st degree as well as abuse of a child related to the infant’s death on May 5. TOPEKA — The Kansas Supreme Court plans to hear arguments this week on whether legislators have satisfied a mandate to improve funding for poor schools. Legislators this year made technical changes in how state aid is distributed without affecting most districts’ share or boosting overall state spending. Attorneys for four school districts contend the changes don’t fix the problem because poor school districts aren’t getting enough money. Andrew Gibson appeared in Riley County Court via webcam from the Riley County Jail. Judge Meryl Wilson granted Gibson’s request for an attorney.
