Riley County commissioners discussed what it should do with an extra $300,000 in the county’s general fund Thursday morning. During Monday’s meeting county treasurer Shilo Heger reported to commissioners that sales tax revenue was $295,995.23 above projections. Stronger than expected auto sales have pushed sales tax revenue above more conservative projections. One option commissioners discussed Thursday is to restore some 2016 appropriations to their 2015 levels, since many of those appropriations were cut across the board during last year’s budget sessions. Riley County Police are mourning the loss of a correction officer. Police and EMS crews responded to an emergent call for service in the 3300 block of Valleydale Drive in Northeastern Manhattan on Wednesday, for a report of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Upon arrival, officers found 29-year-old Lucas Kurtz deceased inside of his home. Kurtz sustained an injury to his head and police do not suspect foul play to be a factor in his death.

At approximately 2:00 PM on January 20, 2016 after receiving an emergent call for service members of the Riley County Police Department and emergency crew with Riley County EMS responded to the 3300 block of Valleydale Drive in Northeastern Manhattan for a report of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. In a month that has been busier than usual, it was only fitting for Superintendent Bob Shannon to declare January as “Schoolboard Recognition Month” at Wednesday evening’s USD 383 Board of Education meeting. “Schoolboards are the very core of democracy,” Shannon said.
