A reminder the very popular annual Flush Picnic is tonight(Wed. July 27th). Chicken dinner is served from 5:00-8:00. Chicken, potatoes, green beans, cole slaw, extras and pie. Adults are $9.00, kids (4-12) $5.00, 3 and under are free. The Flush Rd/24 Hwy intersection is closed but the detour is well marked and only adds a couple of miles. The Flush Picnic has been a local tradition since the 1930’s and especially popular during election years. The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office has informed KMAN about a Saturday injury accident at the intersection of Flush Road and Highway 24. Sheriff’s Deputies, EMS, St. George Fire and St. George Police Department responded to the accident. Upon arrival, deputies discovered that a white 2016 Jeep Wrangler driven by Madison Gaume, 16, of Manhattan, was attempting to cross the eastbound lane of Highway 24 from the south side of Flush Road when it was struck by an eastbound silver 2004 Mercedes driven by Ronda Plumlee, 47, of Wamego. TOPEKA — A major rating agency on Tuesday downgraded Kansas’ credit rating for the second time in two years because of the state’s budget problems. S&P Global Ratings dropped its rating for Kansas to “AA-,” from AA, three months after putting the state on a negative credit watch. S&P also dropped the state’s credit rating in August 2014. Kansas has struggled to balance its budget since Republican Gov. Sam Brownback successfully pushed the GOP-dominated Legislature to slash personal income taxes in 2012 and 2013 in an effort to stimulate the state’s economy. Wamego’s USD 320 Board of Education held a special budget meeting. At Monday’s meeting, Superintendent Tim Winter explained various points of the Code 99 Budget Presentation for the budget year July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017. He explained the sources of revenue for this year’s budget. The State contributes 58% ($12,842,884), Federal is 7% ($15,585,763) and Local Tax Levy is 35% ($7,582,233). According to Winter, the Pott County assessed value increased 5 point 4 percent for an overall increase of $85,468. SALINA — One man has entered a plea in the mistaken-identity shooting death of a Salina girl while another is seeking to withdraw his plea. The Salina Journal reports that 20-year-old Jerome Forbes and 18-year-old Andrew Woodring appeared Monday in Saline County District Court. Forbes pleaded no contest to charges that included involuntary manslaughter. Forbes initially was charged with felony murder in the May 2015 shooting death of 17-year-old Allie Saum. TOPEKA — A Kansas foster care and family preservation contractor says it has begun an internal review of allegations raised in a federal lawsuit that one of its caseworkers sexually harassed and coerced a mother seeking to regain custody of her children. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that St. Francis Community Services President and CEO Robert Smith discussed the allegations in a statement released Friday. The statement says St. Francis strives to “protect any individual entrusted to our care.” The statement comes after the organization initially declined to comment, citing an open investigation. WICHITA — A Kansas man faces federal charges accusing him of having sex with a minor in the Philippines. Anthony Shultz of Lindsborg appeared in federal court in Wichita on Friday. Charges against him include engaging in illicit sexual conduct in a foreign country and production of child pornography. Court documents say he’s accused of traveling to the Philippines, where he engaged in sex with the minor and recorded videos of the encounter before distributing the videos online. Prosecutors say the case began in April with a tip to the FBI about an American who was sexually abusing minors in the Philippines…
Although the Kaw Valley Rodeo wrapped up Saturday, the Riley County Fair was still bustling Sunday. Activities Sunday included the 4-H Livestock Judging Contest, the Blueberry Pie Contest and beef cattle were judged. Of course, there was also the carnival.
