Riley County Police officers and fire officials responded to a vehicle fire in the 1000 block of Temple Lane in Manhattan at approximately 12:40 a.m. Thursday. When officers arrived they found an unknown color Cadillac Escalade fully engulfed in fire. The vehicle was unoccupied and was a total loss. Due to the extent of the damage caused by the fire the owner(s) have not been identified. A Chapman man faces robbery charges in Junction City and other jurisdictions, following his arrest by Dickinson county law enforcement authorities. Travis Moreland, 23, was taken into custody while Dickinson County Sheriff’s and Abilene Police Departments were investigating an incident that had taken place in their jurisdiction. The Junction City Police Department had been investigating a series of Hotel Robberies that took place in Junction City during the month of December. Updated Thursday morning: Firefighters were called to the Riverchase Mobile Home Park north of Manhattan at about two p.m. Wednesday, with damage estimated at nearly $20,000 to the structure and contents. The owner of the mobile home is listed as Lisa Volpent, with Kerrie Volpent the occupant. There were no injuries. The cause is not known although Riley County Fire Chief Pat Collins tells KMAN it appears the fire started in a rear bedroom, more than likely caused by an electrical short in the outlet. Pottawatomie County Attorney Sherri Schuck tells KMAN Dakota Fair, 18, as previously announced, is charged with attempted first degree or the alternative attempted second degree murder, criminal discharge of a firearm into an occupied vehicle, aggravated battery, conspiracy to possess methamphetamine, and criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. TOPEKA —  A Democratic legislator in Kansas says safety problems at a state mental hospital should prompt employee firings, but a Republican lawmaker argues it’s too early to call for such actions.
