The Saint George Police Department along with deputies from the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the 200 block of Northern Heights Circle in Saint George Tuesday evening for a possible burglary in progress, according to a press release from the department. The call came in shortly before 5:30 p.m. that a citizen reported seeing a white male lurking around the residence trying to gain access through different doors. WICHITA — A historic statue has been returned to a Civil War memorial in Wichita after undergoing a nearly three-year renovation in Missouri. The Wichita Eagle reports that a crane hoisted the statute, named “Liberty,” into place Wednesday. It occupies the pinnacle of the Soldiers and Sailors Civil War Monument on the south lawn of the Sedgwick County Historic Courthouse. Sedgwick County project services program manager Tania Cole says the statue was restored for $32,880. Liberty had some structural issues and was coming apart at the seams near her feet. The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a burglary and theft of items that were located in a barn near the area of Burklund Ravine Road and Highway 16 in rural Olsburg. The victim reports that sometime between Monday and Tuesday (April 25th, and April 26), unknown person or persons entered the barn and removed a Bobcat S-175 skid loader, a Land Pride Z-54 zero turn mower, and a 5 x 10 utility trailer. Officers with the Riley County Police Department arrested Dion Gant, 49, of the Kansas Department of Correction on a warrant for the offense of aggravated false impersonation on April 27, 2016 at approximately 12:05 PM. This warrant stems from an incident that occurred in December 2014 and had a bond of $5,000.00. At the time of this report Gant was not confined at the Riley County Jail. Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback held a ceremonial bill signing for HB 2567 Wednesday. The newly signed bill expands eligibility for in-state tuition rates to veterans with established residency in the state prior to service in the armed forces. Last year, legislation was passed (HB 2154) authorizing in-state tuition rates for all veterans and current members of the armed forces using federal education benefits. Kansas State University fraternities are calling on the university to begin investigations of alleged sexual violence that occurs off campus, according to a report from the Associated Press released Wednesday. It cited a story from Monday’s Manhattan Mercury that reported the university’s Interfraternity Council unanimously approved a resolution seeking the university’s involvement in off-campus incidents. The move comes less than a week after two students sued the university, alleging civil rights violations for not looking into two allegations of rape that occurred at off-campus events hosted by fraternities.
