Sales tax numbers for the City of Manhattan rebounded for November after a disappointing showing in October. Manhattan took in $1,064,371 this month according to report from State Treasurer Ron Estes, compared to $955,911 in November 2014. This puts the Little Apple $118,384 ahead of expectations for sales tax receipts for the month. Retail trade accounted for $537,019 while accommodation and food services brought in $130,208. Arts, entertainment and recreation revenue was also a big contributor with $122,510.

HALSTEAD — Authorities say the Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating a matter involving a south-central Kansas police department. Harvey County Attorney David Yoder says KBI agents visited the Halstead Police Department on Monday. Yoder says he asked for KBI assistance recently after receiving information about the police department that warranted further checking from an outside agency. Yoder says he can’t comment on the nature of the investigation because it’s ongoing. SALINA — Authorities have found two batches of homemade alcohol in the kitchen of the Saline County Jail. The Salina Journal reports the alcohol was found this week. Saline County Sheriff’s Capt. Brent Melander says officials found a dispenser filled with about two gallons of clear, homemade liquor during an inspection Monday. And on Tuesday, jail officials found a mustard jar of homemade wine inside a tea dispenser. Crushed tomatoes were still fermenting inside the jar with a rubber glove attached to the top of the jar to help the fermentation process. The Riley County Police Department has received several reports of a caller contacting community members and stating that they have missed jury duty. This caller then states he is a member of the Riley County Police Department and is calling to address a warrant in the community member’s name. Next, the the community member is asked to purchase a gift card and recite the gift card numbers over the phone (at which time the caller accesses the gift card and collects the money). TOPEKA – A Junction City man has been sentenced to life in federal prison for trafficking cocaine in Junction City and Manhattan, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom told KMAN in a press release Wednesday morning. Another defendant in the case was sentenced to more than 21 years. Albert Dwayne Banks, 33, was convicted on conspiracy to distribute more than 280 grams of crack cocaine along with outright distribution. Martye Madabuti Madkins, III, 34, also of Junction City, was sentenced to 262 months in prison. His convictions included distributing crack cocaine within 1000 feet of an elementary school. Manhattan City Commissioners all spoke in support of possible renovations to Peace Memorial Auditorium, but worried about the costs for them Tuesday night in City Hall. Commissioners gathered a work session and heard from the Friends of Peace Memorial Auditorium, a group pushing for renovations that include dedications to military veterans — World War II military veterans especially.
