Several changes will be made to Fort Riley access control points this fall. The 12th Street Gate will have a commercial vehicles only lane begining on September 26th. Non- commercial vehicles will still be allowed to enthrough through the 12th Street Gate, however there will no longer be a designated lane for them. Outbound traffic at 12th Street Gate will also no longer be allowed. Estes Gate will be open 24 hours a day beginning September 30. A KDOT employee was killed Thursday in a mowing accident. Darren Way (39) was killed when his riding mower tipped over, trapping him underneath. He was mowing along I-70 in Sherman County when the accident occurred. “We are saddened at the loss of our co-worker and offer our condolences to Darren’s family, friends and co-workers,” said Interim Transportation Secretary Richard Carlson. “They are in our thoughts and prayers as they cope with this tragedy.” According to release from the Kansas Department of Transportation, Darren Way was an Equipment Operator working out the Goodland subarea office.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A federal judge has thrown out the indictment against a former Bel Aire police officer accused of making a false statement during a federal investigation. The move Wednesday is at the request of prosecutors and comes just days before Robert S. McCaslin was to go to trial. Former Bel Aire Chief John Daily faces sentencing Friday for his role in the scheme to buy and sell discounted firearms by falsely claiming they would be used for law enforcement purposes. SHAWNEE, Kan. (AP) Family and friends have gathered to remember a teen who drowned at a neighborhood lake in suburban Kansas City. The Kansas City Star reports that more than 100 friends, family members and fellow classmates of 17-year-old Treyvon Mays met Wednesday night for a vigil at Lakeview Estates in Shawnee. Mays was at small lake there Tuesday night when his friends lost track of him. They weren’t sure whether he was still in the water or had gone up to a house. Riley County commissioners voted 2-1 to rescind the Public Building Commission Thursday morning. Commissioner Ron Wells — a Republican who is up for reelection in November against Democrat Levi Smith in District 3 — made the motion. After a lengthy debate, chairman Ben Wilson sided with Wells on the issue. Commissioner Robert Boyd, who lost his primary bid against Republican Marvin Rodriguez on Aug. 2, opposed. So far, Rodriguez will run unopposed in November. No Democratic challenger has filed for the District 2 commissioner seat. On Saturday August 20 the Riley County Police Department will conduct a DUI Saturation Patrol.  Officers involved will be looking for signs of impaired driving and other traffic violations.  Motorists who show signs of alcohol and/or drug consumption will be evaluated and appropriate action will be taken. The purpose of this program is to place additional officers in and around the Manhattan area with the goal of detecting and deterring impaired driving. This patrol is the fifth, in a series of eight, which will be conducted this year.  The Kansas Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Project provides the funding for the Saturation Patrol.

Four people have been arrested in connection with an aggravated kidnapping case in Geary County, following a month long investigation which also involved the United States Marshal’s Service. A news release Thursday from Geary county Sheriff Tony Wolf’s office indicates during the midday hours of July 19th the Geary County Sheriff’s Office responded to Old Highway 13 in the southeastern portion of rural Geary County after a man was found severely injured at the edge of a field. Junction City Police report an armed robbery at Subway in the 300 block of West Sixth at about 7:30 Wednesday night. A news release from JCPD Lt. Jeff Childs indicates upon arrival officers learned a lone black male approached one of the on duty employees, produced a handgun and demanded money from the register. Manhattan-Ogden students are back in the classrooms, and administrators have taken the opportunity this week to take a look at enrollment numbers this school year. Besides an additional 50 students at enrolled at MHS, assistant superintendent Eric Reid told board members on Wednesday night the district enrollment might be flat – or even down – for the 2016-2017 school year.
