A man facing child abuse charges in Geary County has entered a not guilty plea and trial has been set for May. Cyjay Echon, who was a Fort Riley soldier, was taken into custody in Kansas City, Missouri this past May after Junction City Police were contacted by Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City in reference to a three month old infant who had been transferred from the Geary Community Hospital. A jury trial for a Manhattan man resulted in guilty verdicts on six of the seven theft and drug-related counts against him. Jeremy Spaur’s jury trial got started Thursday. The not guilty verdict involved burglary of a motor vehicle. Spaur was arrested in March after a search warrant was executed at his home in the 700 block of Riley Lane in reference to a series of motor vehicle thefts and burglaries. The verdict came in late Friday morning. Sentencing is set for January fourth.
The Kansas Court of Appeals issued opinions Friday on three area cases, affirming two and reversing one. A Riley County case involving Travis Day pertained to a battery on a law enforcement case from last year and was affirmed by the higher court. In appealing, Day contended there was insufficient evidence to support the crime. But the Court of Appeals found evidence that Day spat on a law enforcement officer which is sufficient to constitute battery, affirming Riley county District Court’s judgment. RCPD began investigating an aggravated battery that sent one to a medical care facility outside of Riley County, KS and made an arrest yesterday morning. This aggravated battery is domestic related and information available for release is limited. On November 11, 2015 at approximately 2:15 PM police found that a 59-year-old female had previously been struck in the face several times by a 52-year-old male suspect who is known to her. WICHITA –A Sedgwick County judge has dismissed most of the securities charges against two former Wichita developers. The Wichita Eagle reports Sedgwick County District Judge Ben Burgess on Thursday dismissed all but five of the remaining 54 felony fraud counts against former Wichita developers David Lundberg and Michael Elzufon. The ruling came at the conclusion of a preliminary hearing that began Monday. Some of the counts were dropped earlier this week. The Kansas securities commissioner accused the men of selling unregistered securities pertaining to investment projects Wichita between 2005 and 2012. WICHITA — A Gardner man who took part in a 2013 chase and shootout that injured a sheriff’s deputy has been sentenced to more than 35 years in prison. The Wichita Eagle reports that 38-year-old Jason Perez has been ordered to serve the term for about a dozen felony crimes he and his then-girlfriend committed on March 11, 2013. Among his convictions is the attempted first-degree murder of Sedgwick County sheriff’s deputy Lucas Powell.
