Riley County firefighters had a very busy Sunday, with one fire burning about 55 acres off I-70. Fire Chief Pat Collins tells KMAN the call came in just before 10 p.m. at Milepost 320 on I 70. A car that was on fire pulled off on the north shoulder of the West bound lane and caught the ditch on fire, which spread to 55 acres. 20 trucks and 44 firefighters were called in from the Riley County Fire Stations of Konza Station, Hunters Island, Zeandale, Tatarrax and Tuttle Cove. The Geary County Sheriff’s Department responded to an injury accident Sunday morning in the 14,000 block of Moyer Ranch Road involving a school bus. Reports indicate Dana Pleas of Junction City, was traveling west bound in a 1999 GMC Bus when she lost control striking an embankment.  Two juveniles were transported to the Geary Community Hospital for non­life threatening injuries.

BOSTON (AP) An 80-year-old man who admitted running a sprawling multistate marijuana-dealing operation faces sentencing this week. Marshall Dion pleaded guilty to several charges under a plea agreement with prosecutors. A federal judge postponed Dion’s sentencing scheduled for last month. She asked prosecutors and Dion’s lawyers to submit written arguments on why the proposed sentence in the plea agreement is up to seven years in prison when federal sentencing guidelines call for 30 years. Riley County Police arrested a Holton man Saturday for a variety of drug and alcohol related violations. Philip Hawley (20) was picked up on College Avenue shortly before 3 AM; and he was charged with Distribution of opiates, opium or stimulants and unlawful possession of marijuana. He was also charged with purchase and consumption of liquor by a minor and use of drug paraphernalia and operating a vehicle without an ignition interlock device. The Phillips 66 Men’s Basketball Tournament gets underway on Wednesday night in Kansas City, and K-State will lead off the action as they take on Oklahoma State in a 6pm tilt. The Wildcats finished 16-15 overall, and their 5-13 conference mark puts them into the tournament as the #8 seed.  The Cowboys ended the regular season with a 12-19 mark, and won just three times in Big 12 action, making them the #9 seed. Both caucus sites in Manhattan reported higher-than-anticipated turnouts Saturday as Democratic and Republican voters picked their preferred candidates for president. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders was the choice at Anthony Middle School in Manhattan, besting former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton 1,078 to 517 for the Democratic nod. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas was the choice of Riley County Republicans with 624 votes. Ohio Gov. John Kasich was second with 352 votes. Both Sanders and Cruz dominated the state overall. A 21-year-old male sustained a “critical head injury” as a result of an apparent fall from several feet, according to a news release from the Riley County Police Department Saturday night. At approximately 5:20 p.m. officers with the RCPD along with emergency medical professionals with Riley County EMS were dispatched to the 1800 block of Leavenworth Street in Manhattan for a report of a fall which led to a serious injury. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Gov. Sam Brownback has vetoed measures to block a major economic development project and to protect a government office building near the Kansas Statehouse. The governor on Friday vetoed a provision in a budget bill preventing his administration from authorizing bonds backed by state sales tax revenues to lure the American Royal horse and livestock exhibition to Kansas from Kansas City, Missouri. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt is asking the state Supreme Court to delay formally issuing rulings on drunken-driving laws. The court ruled last week that a law punishing drivers who refuse a breath test is unconstitutional. Schmidt said Friday that the U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled to decide a case from other states that present the same constitutional issues as the Kansas case. A decision is expected by June.
