GALENA, Kan. (AP) Cherokee County spent about $28,000 on a grand jury investigation that led to charges that were ultimately dismissed. The county budgeted $50,000 for the investigation in 2015 after opponents of plans to build a landfill in Riverton petitioned for the investigation. Another $50,000 was set aside in the 2016 budget before the charges against the Galena officials were dismissed. The Joplin Globe reports the Galena mayor and six current or former Galena City Council members were indicted on a misuse of public funds charges. The charges were dismissed in September. A petition seeking the grand jury probe…
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The chairman of the Kansas House education committee says his panel won’t vote on a school consolidation measure. Rep. Ron Highland, R-Wamego, told The Topeka Capital-Journal Saturday he doesn’t intend to move forward this year with a House measure introduced by Rep. John Bradford, a Lansing Republican. The measure would pare down the number of school districts to one per county in most counties. The Kansas Association of School Boards estimated the number of districts would drop from 286 statewide to 132. A hearing in Highland’s committee on Wednesday attracted 41 opponents to the bill. Highland says…

After three minutes, it looked like No. 1 Oklahoma might run Kansas State out of Bramlage Coliseum. The Sooners led, 9-0, and the Wildcats hadn’t even attempted a shot. Not so fast. This is college basketball, after all. Wesley Iwundu scored 22 points, Dean Wade added 17 in his first game coming off the bench and K-State knocked off the top-ranked Sooners, 80-69 Saturday evening. “We’ve had a lot of adversity from our injuries and losing close games, so I’m really proud of our guys,” K-State coach Bruce Weber said. “It was a great team win. I told our guys…
A new candidate announced her campaign for Pottawatomie County Commissioner Friday. Dana Wethington says it’s in her best interest, if elected, to pinpoint what voters want out of the government rather than run on her own ideals. “I will be that clear strong voice for them on the Pottawatomie County Commission,” Wethington said. Wethington is a long-time Kansas resident who grew up on a farm, has run the area’s Red Cross and has had years of reporting experience, which she says contributes to her broad understanding of government.

To be at the Beach Museum of Art or not to be at the Beach Museum of Art, that is the question. Yes, a Shakespeare book from 1623 that introduced the world to such famous language that would still be a part of the fabric of western culture centuries later is available for viewing at the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art on the campus of K-State for the entire month of February. But don’t think you can check it out William Shakespeare’s “First Folio” for the weekend. The original book of Shakespeare’s plays is behind thick glass with its own…
