A four year old Riley County marijuana possession case that reached the Kansas Court of Appeals level, resulted in  an unpublished opinion Friday.  The case involves a St. George woman from May of 2011. Aliyah Stephens challenged her felony conviction for possession of marijuana and the resulting sentence on the grounds that her waiver of her constiutional right to a jury trial was infirm. The State Court of Appeals found, with one dissenting opinion, that the Riley County District Court did not adequately inform Stephens of her jury trial right, adding the district court’s brief discussion at Stephens’ arraignment was inadequate.…

The Faculty Senate of Kansas State University has just announced the upcoming 2015 State of the University address. President Kirk Schulz will present the address at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, in the Alumni Center Ballroom in Manhattan and at 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28, in the College Center conference room at the Salina campus. The address will be followed by an open forum serving as an opportunity for discussion with President Schulz. The events will be video streamed online for those who are not able to attend in person. Members of the Manhattan community came out in full force once again, as project officials with the Wildcat Creek Watershed Resiliency Project hosted an Idea Workshop, Thursday night. Voices filled the room at city hall, as ideas – much like the creek itself, began to flow. The overall goal of the meeting was to get input from the community on how the area could be redeveloped into an amenity, should the county receive $40,000,000.00 in block grant funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) National Resiliency Competition. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) The University of Kansas says it’s reached a settlement agreement over the release of documents to a student group looking for ties between an economic research center and Charles and David Koch. Art Hall, a lecturer and executive director of the Center for Applied Economics in the University of Kansas School of Business, sued the university to prevent the release of emails, correspondence and notes to Students for a Sustainable Future. (AP)– Yordano Ventura struck out a career-high 11 in just six innings, Paulo Orlando homered and the Kansas City Royals hung on to beat the struggling Baltimore Orioles 5-3 on Thursday. Ventura (9-7) allowed two hits and four walks to improve to 5-0 in his last seven starts. The Royals’ usually solid bullpen nearly gave it away, though.
