Riley County Commissioners approved $4,000 to help the City of Manhattan pay for fees to Thomas Strategies, a Louisiana firm that specializes in environmental issues. The City of Manhattan emailed Monty Wedel, the county’s planning and special projects director, that it was seeking Thomas Strategies to help craft their application for the HUD (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development) National Disaster Resiliency Competition Grant Competition, which if won, could bring $40 million to the region and address flooding concerns with Wildcat Creek. KANSAS CITY, KAN. – A federal jury Thursday returned a guilty verdict in the case of a Junction City man who stole his father’s identity to apply for a loan to buy a $490,000 house, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said in a press release. 47-year-old Matthew Williams of Junction City was convicted on one count of bank fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft. As KMAN reported earlier, Manhattan High School had a lockout for a brief time Thursday morning. Manhattan High School Principal Greg Hoyt sent a message to Parents, Guardians, and Students indicating Manhattan High School West Campus initiated a lockout at approximately 11:10 AM as administration and security addressed a student issue. Hoyt adds the lockout was initiated as a precautionary measure to ensure safety for everyone. Students were requested to remain in their classroom until further notice. At approximately 11:20 AM the lockout was lifted and students were dismissed to lunch or their 5th period class. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Kansas officials are planning a public summit on drones this fall. The Kansas USA Summit will be Oct. 15 in Wichita. Tiffany Brown, aviation director for the Kansas Department of Transportation, said Wednesday the meeting’s main objective is to show legislators and the public the businesses and resources the state has in the young industry. PITTSBURG, Kan. (AP) Pittsburg State University has completed a 15-year, $30 million effort to remodel all residential housing on its campus. On Wednesday, the university rededicated the final project a $3.1 million renovation of National Hall East. The renovations included enlarged bathrooms, new windows, renovated laundry rooms and improved mechanical systems. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) The father of a Wichita baby not seen since July will spend a year in jail for violating his probation on a battery charge. During a court hearing Wednesday, Gary McKensey Moore Jr., admitted he ignored a no-contact order with Michelle Mendez when he married her in February. He also cut off his GPS tracking device, didn’t report to his probation officer and didn’t pay court costs. The admissions sent him back to Sedgwick County jail. Manhattan sales tax receipt numbers are in for August, with $904,472 reportedly collected. That’s up from last August’s $894,136 and $14,594 more than had been budgeted. The year to date dollar figure is approximately $7,211,967. Manhattan Finance Director Bernie Hayen indicates there’s not much to report regarding any specific sector, other than a slight increase in total retail sales which he adds is always good. Hayen  indicates the  percentage increase-to-date is likely the city’s growth for the remainder of this year and probably the next report will be modest. But the finance director says at least growth continues.

The Kansas State University Police Department is looking for any information regarding an investigation of a burglary at a K-State Forestry Extension building at Tuttle Creek State Park. Between Aug. 21-25, an unknown person or people entered the building and stole several items including a vehicle, ATV, lawn mower and other items. The vehicle has been recovered, but the other losses are valued at more than $10,000.
