“There simply is nothing better than ending a fiscal year on a high note”–those are the words of Manhattan Finance Director Bernie Hayen regarding sales tax numbers released Wednesday afternoon. $931,578 was collected in December compared to $863,570 the same time in 2014. That brings the year to date totals to just under 11 million dollars at $10,993,385–compared to $10,723,686 dollars the year before. It also means a positive budget impact of $75,822 for December and $392,367  for the year to date.

More information was released Wednesday regarding a shooting KMAN first reported Tuesday evening. The Riley County Police Department responded to the 200 block of East Park Road in Manhattan or Manhattan City Park on Tuesday at approximately 6:20 PM for a report of a juvenile who had sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. Officers on the scene were able to determine the wound appeared to be accidental and possibly self-inflicted. The Douglas County Commission will consider approving a maximum price of approximately $2.35 million for the first phase of the county fairgrounds renovation. The Lawrence Journal-World reports (http://bit.ly/1QKIfkB ) that the commission will discuss the cost at its meeting Wednesday. Assistant County Administrator Sarah Plinsky says abatement and demolition can begin as early as Monday if it’s approved. The first phase’s area surrounds two buildings in the southwest portion of the fairgrounds. The buildings will be demolished and replaced with the new meeting hall.
