Preliminary enrollment numbers have been released for the 2015-2016 school year at Manhattan/Ogden USD 383. Grades K-12 reported an increase of 108 students compared to last year, bringing the first day’s attendance to a total of 6,118. USD 383 Assistant Superintendent, Eric Reid says the school board is expecting changes to these numbers, as there are transfer students to process in the following weeks. Official enrollment statistics will be released later on September 20th, and these current numbers do not include other services of USD 383, such as the Flint Hills Job Corps, virtual school and preschool.

A Manhattan woman faces a high bond following her arrest late Monday morning.  Juree Burgett, 56, was taken into custody while in the 2000 block of Shirley Lane in Manhattan at approximately 11:35 AM on a warrant for failure to fulfill diversion agreement. Burgett’s bond was set at $27,000. ### Riley County Police report Monday afternoon at about 4:45 PM officers arrested Elizabeth Havens, 29, of Manhattan on a warrant for probation violation while in the 100 block of N. 4th Street in Manhattan. Pottawatomie County Commissioners have approved the 2016 budget. “It was a long process,” said Pat Weixelman, commission chairman. The budget does include a slight mill levy increase. “It was only about a .7 of a mill it went it, but we hate to do that,” said Weixelman. While growth in the west part of the county has made it difficult to keep the levy flat, weixelman says Pottawatomie County is still in great shape compared to the rest of the state.

Convicted sex offender, John Thomas, 48, was sentenced for three counts of sexual exploitation of a child Monday in Riley County District Court. Before his sentencing, Thomas gave an emotional apology in court to his family and the family of the victim. The victim’s mother stood and presented a statement in return, mentioning Thomas “deserved life” for his numerous crimes against her child. Thomas was sentenced to 68 months in prison for Count 1, 32 months for Count 2 and 32 months for Count 3 of his convicted offenses with counts one and two to be served consecutively and the third concurrent.
