MEDICINE LODGE — Crews continue extinguishing hot spots from a wildfire that has burned hundreds of square miles since starting last week in Oklahoma and spreading into rural Kansas. The heaviest damage is in Kansas’ Barber County, where the fire remained 89 percent contained Thursday night when the most recent update was provided. Officials overseeing the firefight in the county said in a news release that there were at least seven calls for service Thursday and that 10 new acres burned. Officers with the Riley County Police Department took Sidney Brown Jr., 15, of Manhattan into custody for the offense of aggravated robbery on March 31, 2016 at approximately 1:00 PM while in the 400 block of Laramie Street. This arrest stems from an incident that RCPD first alerted to the community to on March 28, 2016. Brown was given no bond. This arrest is in addition to an arrest made on a 17-year-old male the day prior for the same incident. A Topeka man faces sentencing April 11 for sex trafficking in a case involving Junction City and Manhattan.  Reginald Newman, 29, pleaded guilty in early February. His wife Tiara Jade Newman, 22, also of  Topeka, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to committing sex trafficking. In her plea, she admitted that on March 21, 2015, she and her husband took a 17-year-old girl from Topeka to Junction City for the purpose of prostitution. WICHITA — A government report shows Kansas farmers are planning to plant a whole lot more corn this year. The National Agricultural Statistics Service reported Thursday that Kansas growers intend to plant 4.8 million acres of corn. That is a 16 percent jump from a year ago. Its prospective plantings report shows farmers are seeding fewer acres of the state’s other major crops. The 8.5 million acres of winter wheat planted last fall for harvest later this year are down 8 percent from the previous season. Soybean planted acres are down just 1 percent to 3.85 million acres compared to a year…

OTTAWA — Jurors have recommended the death penalty for an eastern Kansas man convicted of killing four people, including a toddler. The Franklin County jury recommended the sentence Thursday for 30-year-old Kyle Flack, who was convicted last week of capital murder in the deaths of 21-year-old Kaylie Bailey and her 18-month-old daughter, Lana. He also was convicted of premeditated first-degree murder for killing 31-year-old Steven White and second-degree murder for killing 30-year-old Andrew Stout. A teen suspect in an attempted murder case in Pottawatomie County entered pleas of no contest Thursday to attempted second degree murder, discharge of a firearm at an occupied vehicle, and criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Dakota Fair’s charges involve the shooting of Tyrel Britton, 23, in late December on Mt. Zion Road in rural St. George. Fair’s sentencing is set for May 19th. Britton was flown to Topeka for medical treatment following the shooting but survived his injuries. Law enforcement officials at the time indicated Fair was believed to have fired a gun from the…
