Late Monday afternoon, staff at Via Christi Hospital on College Ave. in Manhattan received a piece of mail that they later deemed to be suspicious in nature. With the purpose of being overly cautious the Riley County Police Department Hazardous Materials Response Team and Bomb Team with assistance from the Manhattan Fire Department Hazardous Materials Response Team responded to the call. It was later determined that the suspicious piece of mail was a document that posed no risk to public safety. The Riley County Police Department would like to thank the Manhattan Fire Department for their assistance and continued support.

Police believe the man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Riley County Police Department identified the man as 68-year-old Walter Cash of Manhattan. A Riley County judge upholds a lifetime post-release supervision sentence for a man charged with sexual exploitation of a child. Jeremy Carroll appeared in court Monday afternoon for re-sentencing. Carroll’s attorney says the sentence of lifetime post-release is unconstitutional and cruel in nature because his client has no criminal history. Judge Meryl Wilson asked Carroll if he would like to withdraw his plea, in which he chose not to. Judge Wilson denied the request to modify the sentence and reaffirmed the original sentence of 31 months and lifetime post-release supervision for sexual exploitation of a child. A Manhattan woman will serve a consecutive sentence of 8 months and 36 months of probation for charges of aggravated battery and child endangerment. Lesah Heiman appeared in court Monday afternoon alongside her attorney, Nicholas Heiman. When asked by Judge Meryl Wilson if she had anything to say, Heiman said, “I would like to apologize to the family for any hurt they experienced through all this.
