Riley County EMS Director Larry Couchman told county commissioners Monday morning that there were relatively few incidents during this weekend’s Country Stampede music festival. The event, which celebrated it’s 20th year in Tuttle Creek State Park, began Thursday and concluded Sunday night. Over 100,000 concert goers attend the festival each year and Couchman said good weather and mild temperatures kept heat-related incidents low this year. The good weather may have been a factor in increase in alcohol-related problems, though. A soldier who had been slated for a jury trial this week in Riley County District Court on rape and indecent liberties charges has entered a plea. Timothy Ayers entered the plea to rape and aggravated indecent liberties prior to the trial. Ayers’ arrest in December stemmed from a warrant in connection with a northern Riley County incident that occurred last August. The charges involved a child under 14.
The City of Manhattan Fire Department would like to remind citizens to use fireworks responsibly and enjoy a safe Fourth of July holiday. The Manhattan Fire Department responded to fewer fireworks related calls during the legal discharge dates in 2014 than in 2013. There were five fireworks related calls in 2014, all occurring on July 3rd or 4th, with no fire loss being reported. Sales tax numbers for Manhattan in June were down, according to figures just released by the State Treasurer’s Office and Manhattan Finance Director Bernie Hayen. The $870,536 collected is about $18,000 less than June of last year, when the numbers were $888,675. the net budget impact is a negative $4,515–previous to this a large surplus was shown in the budget impact numbers. Hayen notes this is the first month in 2015 that was not higher than the preceding year. Former fugitive David Sweat is hospitalized in critical condition after he was caught in upstate New York, near the Canadian border. Sweat was captured on the property of an Amish dairy farmer who heard the gunshots.
