OAKLAND, Calif. (AP)– Jeremy Guthrie and Salvador Perez delivered a milestone win for the Kansas City Royals. Guthrie struck out a season-high seven batters to top 1,000 for his career and Perez homered for his 500th career hit to help Kansas City complete a three-game sweep of the Oakland Athletics with a 5-3 victory on Sunday. “We had two big milestones today, which I think are big,” manager Ned Yost said. “So they got that behind them and now they just keep moving forward.” Omar Infante hit a tiebreaking single in a three-run sixth inning for the Royals, who have…

On Sunday afternoon Topeka’s Oakland Church of the Nazarene was on lockdown after someone had threatened to bring a gun to the church. Police arrived to the church at 939 Northeast Oakland at 1 p.m. after hearing reports of a possible threat to the facility, but the lockdown ended shortly after 2:15 p.m. after officers concluded there was no threat. During the lockdown, occupants of the church were relocated to the basement. No suspects were taken into custody, but the investigation is ongoing

US Senator Jerry Moran was at the Country Stampede on Saturday night, and not just for the music entertainment.  He was on hand to honor veterans of the Vietnam War, with 2015 being the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the conflict. “We’re going to do something tonight that wasn’t done when many of these veterans returned home”, said the Senator, referring to the general resentment felt by so many who served in the region during the late sixties and early seventies.
