Wamego’s Veteran’s memorial  went from vision to reality with the unveiling of the bronze “Duty Called”.   The unveiling ceremony was held Friday afternoon at the Columbian Theatre, with an opportunity to meet the artists, Charlie and Carson Norton from Leoti, Kansas.   Both Charlie and Carson revealed how the bronze design was born, and some of the significant parts of the sculpture.   Charlie said it was like coming full circle, as a Viet Nam veteran, the piece was special to him and son Carson.  Charlie said he’s been casting for 42 years, and had always done Western art, with his largest…

Update June 29 12:30 PM: An investigation for a Riley County man is ongoing for aggravated assault, battery and criminal use of a weapon. Police say the incident started at 510  Colorado Street around 2:15 AM Saturday. Police believe the man had brandished a firearm in a threatening manner. Officers notified nearby residents after the man barricaded himself inside a home he had legal access to. Several hours later he exited the home and was arrested without incident. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A 20-year-old Topeka man accused of driving a vehicle loaded with what he thought were explosives to Fort Riley won’t attend an upcoming hearing in his case. John T. Booker Jr. was arrested April 10 near Junction City as part of an FBI operation that included two informants to whom authorities say Booker detailed his plans to join the Islamic State terrorist group and die in a suicide bombing mission at Fort Riley. A three-judge panel in Shawnee County on Friday ruled that the block-grant school finance bill passed by the legislature this spring unconstitutional, saying that it did not address the adequacy and equity issues the court raised in previous rulings. The ruling in the case of Luke Gannon and Friends et al vs. the State of Kansas could potentially bring the Kansas Legislature back for a special session.
