TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) At least 24,200 workers at Kansas state government agencies and state universities have received notices that they’ll be furloughed if lawmakers don’t approve a budget by Sunday. Figures provided Friday to The Associated Press showed that almost 71 percent of those employees work at a state university. Department of Administration spokesman John Milburn said about 7,100 employees in agencies under Gov. Sam Brownback’s direct control received notices. The University of Kansas reported sending furlough notices to almost 5,300 workers. Notices went to another 2,600 workers at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Violent storms along Colorado’s front range produced tornadoes, heavy rain and hail that destroyed at least three homes, damaged more than 24 others and opened a 15-foot-deep sinkhole in suburban Denver that swallowed a police SUV.
A citywide cleanup effort following Thursday night’s storms will not be performed. The City of Manhattan forestry and public works crews have been working throughout the early morning hours and will continue to remove tree branches and debris from public roadways today. City crews will be removing limbs from citytrees in the public right-of-way areas and will continue to clear storm inlets. Typically, city trees are between the curb and the sidewalk or roughly 10 to 15 feet from the curb. Early Friday morning members of the Riley County Police Department assisted ATF, Homeland Security, and US Postal Service Investigators in the execution of a Federal search and arrest warrant. No further information has been released and RCPD wants to make clear that the general public was not in danger. “Roads were closed for a short time this morning, specifically the 500 block of Fort Riley Blvd., out of an abundance of caution.” – Public Information Officer Mat Droge.
It was a rough night for emergency crews, with winds up to 73 mph in the Manhattan area, leading the destruction of power lines and trees.
