Gyimes, who will arrive at K-State as a freshman, was recognized by the Hungarian Volleyball Federation as the country’s top junior female player after she played in the CEV U19 Volleyball European Championship. On Monday at approximately 9:45 p.m., the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office received a report of two stranded canoeists on the Kansas River east of the Belvue Boat Ramp. The two individuals had been attempting to make it back to the Belvue boat ramp but were unable to because of the hazardous conditions of the river. The Sheriff’s Office along with Belvue Fire, Wamego City Fire, Louisville Fire, Wamego EMS, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, St. Mary’s Police Department and Pottawatomie County Emergency Management converged on the area in a rescue effort. The Leonardville man facing child exploitation charges had a status hearing on Tuesday at 1:00 in the afternoon. John Thomas, who reportedly has about 100 sexual exploitation of a child counts against him, was arrested in Arizona. A 2-hour preliminary hearing is set for Thomas on July 10th at 9:00 AM. Judge William Malcolm with the Riley County District Court oversaw this scheduling. Judge Malcolm also set the 3-hour preliminary hearing for Mark Self Jr., the Manhattan man charged with the shooting incident in Aggieville earlier this month will appear in court at 1:00 PM on July 31st. Motions were filed and denied, tearful statements were given, and ultimately a man found guilty of aggravated robbery was sentenced to prison time. This all took place during Trey Campbell’s sentencing in Riley County District Court Tuesday morning. Campbell’s Attorney, Jillian Waesche filed motions for acquittal , a new trial, and departure, stating the evidence presented was just testimony and there was no hard evidence. Judge David Stutzman chose to deny these motions. Waesche then shared facts about Campbell’s past that she believes proved his good character. Another status hearing was held in the case of Derik Kesler, who faces a vehicular homicide charge involving the death of a bicyclist from Manhattan. Kesler appeared in Riley County District Court alongside his attorney, who requested a three day jury trial. The trial was set for September 22nd-24th. Judge David Stutzman asked that pre-trial motions be filed by attorneys by June 26th. A two hour preliminary hearing and pre-trial hearing were also set for August 4th at 1:30 p.m.
