The Wamego City Commission reviewed a Recreation Department application. During a Tuesday meeting, City Manager Merl Page went over a draft of the Rec Departments Soccer Field Rental Application that was developed after request were made from private entities to hold soccer camps at the site. Page said there was a rental strategy in the past but new requests have deemed it necessary to have a formal agreement. The Wamego City Commission recently reviewed the city library’s 2015 Annual Report. During a meeting Tuesday, Wamego Public Library’s Executive Director, Bryan McBride began his presentation by thanking the Commission for their support over the years. The Library’s motto is ‘Expanding Minds, Empowering People and Enriching Community’ and the numbers reflect positive results. According to the report, there were over 43,000 visitors to the library, which amounts to one person for every 3 point 3 minutes or 146 per day. Officers with the Riley County Police Department arrested Sue Lee, 24, of Manhattan while in the 1100 block of Gardenway on May 17, 2016 at approximately 4:15 PM. Lee was arrested on a warrant for the offense of rape for an incident that occurred earlier this year. He was given a bond of $50,000.00 and at the time of this report was confined at the Riley County Jail.

Childcare changes could eventually take hold in Manhattan. City Commissioners discussed amending definitions of childcare centers during a routine meeting, Tuesday night. The changes will define daycare centers as facilities with 12 or fewer children and nursery schools as having 13 or more. The change doubles the numbers outlined in current city guidelines. Commissioners proceeded with approval of the first reading of an ordinance making the amendment, despite several concerns over the increase and how it complies with state standards. TOPEKA — Kansas will not cut off Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood until July 7 in the third delay in acting against the abortion provider. A state health department attorney suggested the latest delay Tuesday during a telephone conference hearing in a federal lawsuit filed by Planned Parenthood against the cutoff. U.S. District Judge Julie Robinson approved the latest delay. The state has asked for delays because that would give time for the parties in the lawsuit to prepare. BURLINGTON — Dredging underway at an east-central Kansas reservoir is being touted as important in ensuring that area’s water supply to customers who include a nuclear power plant. Gov. Sam Brownback on Tuesday directed the dredging of the John Redmond Reservoir near Burlington to begin. He calls it a significant step in preserving the water resource for future generations. The Kansas Water Office says that since 1964, the reservoir has lost an estimated 42 percent of its conservation pool storage capacity, partly through sediment accumulation. Daniel Costlow filed with the Pottawatomie County Clerk’s office Tuesday morning. Costlow is listed as a Republican from Havensville. HAYS — Authorities say the body of a man has been discovered in a ditch near Hays. The Ellis County Sheriff’s Office says that around 10:15 p.m. Sunday, a motorist found the body of 22-year-old Dylan Weiser of Thornton, Colorado, about five miles south of Hays. Ellis County Attorney Thomas Drees said Weiser used to live in La Crosse, Kansas. An investigation is ongoing.
