Officers with the Riley County Police Department arrested Christopher Futrell, 22, of Rowlett, Texas on May 16, 2016 at approximately 6:15 PM. Futrell was at the Riley County Police Department when arrested on this warrant for the offense of probation violation (X2). He was given “no bond” on one of these warrants and $50,000.00 on the other. At the time of this report was confined at the Riley County Jail. TOPEKA — Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback signed a bill Monday that he said is aimed at freeing more people from poverty, but opponents argue the new welfare restrictions leave families without a safety net during financial difficulties. Under the new law Kansans will be limited to 24 months on cash assistance over their lifetime. The previous limit was 36 months. Able-bodied recipients of food assistance also will be required to participate in an employment or training program and not quit a job that offers at least 30 hours of work per week. After several months of discussion, the Riley County Law Board came to an agreement on a budget for the Riley County Police Department. The budget amounts to about $20,291,055.19, which is nearly 2.7 percent over last year’s. Included are additions for court security, a mental health designated employee, and a dispatcher. Court security created considerable discussion with a presentation by Riley County Court Chief Judge Meryl Wilson at the beginning of the meeting. The Riley County Commission Chambers filled up towards the end of the board’s meeting with various farmers and other residents of the more rural north half of the county Monday morning. They were there to hear more about the deteriorating Fancy Creek Bridge on Fancy Creek Road. It’s a bridge important to residents in the area — especially for farmers who have land on either side of the creek. AUGUSTA — Authorities say two people have been wounded at a high school graduation ceremony in southern Kansas after a man with a concealed weapon permit adjusted a sock he had stuffed a pistol into. Augusta Police Chief Tyler Brewer said Sunday afternoon that the shooting was accidental and described it as a “knucklehead situation.” The bullet went through the man’s foot and traveled about another 50 feet before striking a woman in her calf. The woman has been released from a Wichita hospital, while the man has been admitted with an injury that’s not life-threatening. Brewer says the Augusta High School…

The Junction City Police Department is investigating the death of an unidentified female Sunday afternoon. At about 3:11 p.m. Sunday, officers were dispatched to the Super 8 hotel at 1133 South Washington Street, room 217 to check the welfare of the occupant. Upon the arrival of the responding officers a 36-year old woman was located in the room. It is believed the death was not criminal in nature but a complete investigation is being conducted. An autopsy is scheduled for today.
