The Manhattan High girls basketball team bounced back after a loss to Emporia last Friday night with a 44-30 win over Andale in the first round of the Mid America Classic in McPherson. The Lady Indians (9-2) led 12-11 after the first quarter. They would outscore Andale (3-7) 16-7 in the second quarter to take a ten point lead at halftime. MHS would outscore Andale 16-12 in the second half. The MHS defense forced 14 turnovers and held Andale to just 20% shooting in the game. School districts across the country have been changing their mascots in the name of political correctness, a newfound organization is urging Manhattan High School to follow suit. On Wednesday evening, ReImage MHS held their inaugural meeting at the First United Methodist Church Harris Activity Center with a crowd of thirty activitists in attendance. Prior to 1940, Manhattan was represented by a variety of mascots including the Blues and Junior Wildcats. The district wanted to memorialize former coach Frank Prentup of Native American heritage. Two people have been arrested in connection with a death reported by Junction City Police Monday.   Gabrielle “Gabby” Williams,  19, and Joseph “DoDa” Craig,  24, both of Junction City were taken into custody. The name of the victim has also been released–David Phillips, 24, of Manhattan, whose body was located in an apartment in the 800 block of West 12th in Junction City. As earlier reported, the victim was found dead from gunshot wounds to the head. Williams and Craig were arrested Wednesday afternoon at about four. HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) A Hutchinson man has pleaded no contest to charges resulting from a standoff with law enforcement officers last August. Joseph Roman entered the plea Tuesday to 15 counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer with a deadly weapon. Another charge against Roman’s father was dropped as part of the plea agreement. The Hutchinson News reports the standoff began after Roman argued with his father and went into a garage. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The Kansas Lottery is seeking permission from legislators to sell tickets from vending machines. A hearing on the bill scheduled for Wednesday before the House Commerce, Labor and Economic Development Committee was postponed indefinitely while the bill is refined. Lottery officials believe eliminating the state’s ban on electronic ticket-dispensing machines would boost sales and provide additional revenues for the state. The bill also would repeal a ban on lottery advertising at college sporting events, though ads still would be barred at high school events. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) The University of Kansas has unblocked limited information about two fraternities that were placed on probation for hazing. But the Lawrence Journal-World reports that most of the information it sought when it initially requested documents from the school in October remains redacted. The paper raised concerns in December about the redactions with an open records appeal. The university responded by provided a slightly less-redacted version of one of the five documents initially given to the newspaper. A verbal altercation which turned physical resulted in a police response in the are of Mission Circle in Manhattan on January 26, 2016 at approximately 6:00 PM. Officers were told that this altercation involved a subject brandishing a firearm prior to leaving the scene with another individual in a green pontiac.
