A Duluth teenager  facing burglary and theft charges waived a preliminary hearing that was to be held Tuesday in Pottawatomie County District Court. Nathan Bell, 18, is now set for an August 14th arraignment.   Bell was arrested in April in connection with a burglary that took place in Onaga. During an investigation, several firearms wre recovered that had been reported as stolen. Bell was arrested for burglary and theft and his bond was set at $20,000.

Three fire crews worked together Tuesday evening, to extinguish a structure fire in St. Marys. Pottawatomie County Fire Supervisor, Bruce Brazzle said the golf cart repair business is located at 102 West Bertrand street. St. Marys, Rossville, and Emmett fire crews responded around 10:30 that evening.  Although Brazzle did not have any concrete dollar-loss number, he estimated the damage was around $20,000-$30,000. Officers from the St. Marys Police Department, the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Department, the Pottawatomie County Fire Supervisor, and the state fire marshall investigated the fire, and found that it was indeed an arson. A first-degree murder preliminary hearing was held in Geary County District Court on Wednesday morning.  Anthony Nichols is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of 37-year-old Anthony Nixon in September 2013.  Nichols also faces a first-degree murder charge in Riley County for the stabbing death of 68-year-old John Burroughs, which authorities say, happened near the time of the Geary County case. Kansas State University is continuing its legacy of producing Fulbright award winners to represent the United States.   Adam Miller, a May 2012 master’s degree graduate in Spanish second language acquisition, Overland Park, is a 2014-2015 Fulbright U.S. Student grant recipient to Argentina, and Jacob Schroeder, sophomore in chemistry, Silver Lake, is a 2014-2015 Fulbright U.S. Summer Institute award winner to Scotland.   The Fulbright programs create international educational exchange opportunities to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.   Miller will work as an English teaching assistant in Argentina for…

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Officials at Topeka-based CoreFirst Bank say thousands of customers, including those in Manhattan, have been affected by a disruption in its computer-based applications.  Topeka media reports indicate a cut in an AT&T fiber-optic line late Tuesday morning affected ATM services, credit and debit card transactions, mobile applications and the bank’s website. CoreFirst president Kurt Kuta said the disruption left the bank working off account balances as of Monday’s close of business. Deposits and other transactions made after the cut occurred were being recorded in one part of the bank’s computer server, but did not show up for customers. The…
