Roosevelt University’s Board of Trustees has unanimously elected Ali R. Malekzadeh, dean of the College of Business Administration at Kansas State University, as the sixth president of Roosevelt, effective July 1. He will succeed Charles R. Middleton, who is retiring June 30 after a distinguished 50-year career in higher education, including 13 years as Roosevelt’s president. An expert on strategic management and an accomplished fundraiser, Dr. Malekzadeh, a 59-year-old Iranian-American, has been a business dean at private and public universities for 17 years. A 59-year-old man convicted in Riley and Shawnee Counties for murders that occurred 37 years ago apparently has been denied parole. Albert Williams was considered for parole in January public comment sessions but a recent entry on his status reported by the Kansas Department of Corrections shows his earliest possible release date as March of 2023. The 1978 murders inclulded the stabbing death of Pamela Parker, 24, during a robbery attempt at the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce. Williams also was convicted in 1979 in the shooting death of Pam Smith, 19, outside her East Topeka home. Williams is currently being held…
Manhattan city crews will begin picking up yard debris and tree limbs Monday as part of the city’s annual Spring Cleanup program. Important things to remember: Put all yard debris in yard waste paper bags, which you can purchase from local retailers. Place limbs and branches in a pile near the curb; don’t put them in boxes or tie them in a bundle. Have your items to the curb by the day indicated on the map. On March 26, 2015 the Riley County Police Department filed a total of 7 reports related to motor vehicle theft, criminal damage to property, and/or theft. Six of these reports were filed in a 2-block radius surrounding the intersection of College Heights Road and Sunset Ave. in Manhattan. Police began these investigations after receiving a report of an attempted vehicle theft in the 2000 block of College Heights Road.
