Not one, but two Manhattan High baseball players have been named Louisville Slugger All-Americans. Wichita State signee Bret Fehr is a first team All-American as an outfielder, while junior Jesse Steinbring received second team honors. Fehr led the Tribe with a .446 batting average this spring, with three homers and 21 RBI. He pounded out 29 hits, including six doubles and six triples, and also scored 29 runs. A powerful line of Thunderstorms moved through Northeast Kansas early Sunday morning resulting in downed power lines and scattered power outages. The storm brought heavy rain accompanied by high winds at around 1:30 a.m. to the Manhattan area. Multiple power lines were reported down in the area around Westloop Shopping Center. Westar Energy reported approximately 2,100 homes without power at 2:30 a.m. Sunday, 135 in Pottawatomie County and approximately 2,150 in Geary County. The Kansas City Royals’ left-hander matched a career high with nine strikeouts and scattered five hits over seven-plus shutout innings in a 9-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday. This was the sixth year for the Annual Nelson’s Landing Benefit. The event kicked off Friday evening with a Jordy Nelson autograph signing. On Saturday, the golf tournament began in the morning, the poker run took place at noon, and a live auction was held that evening. This year’s benefit was for Dylan Easterberg (7) and Megan Wheartyl (22). Easterberg was diagnosed with a cancerous Wilms Tumor back in October. Several members of the public, Manhattan City Commissioners, and veterans attended a flag ceremony, held at Manhattan City Hall, on Saturday morning. The event began at 9:00 a.m., as members of Chapter 28 Disabled American Veterans (DAV) took down the old American flag and the old P.O.W. flag. These old flags will be taken to Walmart, where they will be retired properly. New flags were raised, and Manhattan Mayor, Wynn Butler shared a few words. “Flag day is a day to celebrate the United States, and today is also the birthday of the United States Army”, Butler commented.
