Kansas State University’s College of Education and Manhattan/Ogden USD 383 have partnered on the implementation of a Department of Defense Education Activity grant.  The grant awarded for $1,739,045, is through the Promoting Student Achievement at Schools Impacted by Military Force Structure Changes Competitive Grant Program. This partnership was conducted in order to provide a STEM Summer Institute on the K-State campus.  This month, the institute will host over 300 5th-9th grade students, 24 school district faculty and staff members, 28 KSU pre-service students, and staff to participate in learning activities. “It’s going to be a tough budget year. We have some tough decisions we’ll have to make”, commented Riley County Commissioner, Dave Lewis, as 2015 budget requests continued during Thursday’s commission meeting. Most county department heads monitor several funds within their budgets. A few of these department heads shared their budget requests throughout the meeting, including Budget and Finance Officer, Johnette Shepek; County Clerk, Rich Vargo and Public Works Director, Leon Hobson. UPDATE at 4:00:   MFD Deputy Chief, Ryan Almes has reported that the gas leak has been stopped, and the nearby businesses have been re-opened.   UPDATE at 3:30:   Manhattan Fire Department officials confirmed that a one inch gas line is involved. All entrances to the nearby businesses have been blocked off. Gary Skrdlant, vice president of American Institute of Baking International, will be retiring after 3 decades with the company. AIB International serves food processing, distribution, food service, and retail industries worldwide. The company is headquartered in Manhattan. Skrdlant was a key player in creating AIB’s regional offices in Leatherhead, United Kingdom; Shanghai, China; and Queretaro, Mexico. He lead negotiations that resulted in AIB acquiring a food safety inspection company in China. Skrdlant also served in multiple finance-related positions in the company.
