The Kansas Highway Patrol has completed its investigation of a fatal accident that occurred near Keats a few months ago, indicating a high rate of speed was involved. The December seventh accident resulted in the death of Brent Kilbourn, 17, of Blue Rapids. Wyatt Howe, 17, of Riley, who was injured in the accident, was the driver of Chevy Camaro involved in the accident, which ended up wrapped around a tree on the passenger’s side during the early morning accident. Over 4,000 people showed up from at least 16 different Kansas counties in support of Fort Riley for Monday’s listening tour in Junction City. This is according to Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce President, Lyle Butler, who added that over 7,000 people tuned in via media. Butler informed Riley County Commissioners, during their Thursday meeting, he was impressed with the turnout. The original goal was to have 400 people there, which over time grew to a goal of 800 people. Sunset Zoo released its attendance numbers for the year of 2014. These numbers, however, are significant to the zoo. They welcomed a record 79,269 visitors last year. Sunset Zoo has been a part of the Manhattan community for 82 years. Zoo director Scott Shoemaker says he and the Zoo staff are “blown away by this growth,” as the increase represents 6 percent up from 2013, and a 26 percent increase over the last five years. Shortly after 5:30 Tuesday morning, the Geary County Sheriff’s Office responded to K-244 Mile Marker three for a report of a burned vehicle. Further investigation revealed the 2008 Mercedes-Benz was burned intentionally and lead to the arrest of Jennifer Grosser of Abilene, and Brandon Johnson of Junction City, for Arson With Intent to Defraud, Conspiracy to Commit Arson, Felony Criminal Damage to Property and Felony Interference With Law Enforcement.
