KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Chris Carter hit two home runs, George Springer set a rookie club record for homers in a month and the Houston Astros beat the Kansas City Royals 9-3 Wednesday for their fifth straight win. The Astros, with the worst record in the AL at 22-32, won three times in Kansas City for their first sweep of the season. Three area girls will play in the Kansas Basketball Coaches’ All-Star games next month. The trio all were named first team all-state following their senior seasons, Wamego’s Kaylee Page, Manhattan High’s Darby Price, and Riley County’s Madison Vargo. The KBCA all-star games will be Saturday, June 28th on the campus of Kansas Wesleyan in Salina.  The girls contest tips off at 6:00pm, followed by the boys at 8:00.

Wamego welcomed the Honor Flight home. A large contingent of family and friends gathered to welcome the 25 Veterans and 25 Wamego Honor Society student sponsors of this year’s Honor Flight late Wednesday night. As earlier reported on KMAN, each student was paired with a veteran for the trip to Washington, D.C. to visit the different war memorials. According to deputy city manger Jason Hilgers the vetting of the final four candidates for the position of Manhattan assistant city manager continued on Wednesday.  The candidates have bested over 50 other applicants so far in the selection process. Candidates Jacob Wood, Kiel Mangus, Jamie Shockley, and Cody Sims were present at an informal meet and greet held in City Hall on Wednesday evening.  The candidates mingled, and engaged in discussions with senior city staff, citizens, city commissioners, and Mayor Wynn Butler. KMAN reported Tuesday that the Fort Riley man found dead at 1731 North Park Drive on Monday, had been identified.  The Junction City Police Department released additional details around 3:45 Wednesday afternoon. After conducting a preliminary investigation into the death of Shawn Thomas (26), and receiving the preliminary autopsy results, the death seemed to be a result of a self inflicted gunshot wound.  The police department also does not believe there was any foul play.
