An alleged aggravated battery case involving a firearm and a marijuana deal, was discussed during a preliminary hearing Thursday afternoon. The incident is said to have taken place back in July, and resulted in the arrest of two men. One of the men arrested in this case is Trey Campbell, who appeared in Judge William Malcolm’s courtroom alongside his attorney, Jillian Waesche. For the third time in a year, PEO Chapter IW of Manhattan has been able to provide a continuing education grant to a local student. MATC Nursing Student Lindsey Krajkoski of  Junction City was presented with a $1,200 check Thursday at the Manhattan Area Technical College. Krajkoski hopes to finish her RN education by May. The local committee considering Krajkoski’s application included IW Continuing Education Chair Cathy Scroggs, Kris Stafford, Carl Keltner, and Jackie Mershon. An Ogden man facing charges for attempted murder, aggravated robbery, and aggravated burglary pleaded no contest in a preliminary hearing Thursday, Jan. 22. In agreeing to this plea, the suspect, Johnny Cossey, also waived his rights to a jury trial. Judge Meryl Wilson read through Cossey’s charges, which included the infliction of bodily harm by stabbing the victim, identified as Vincent Taylor of Ogden, in the neck, and striking him with a blunt object. Cossey’s next court appearance was set for Monday, Mar. 9th at 2:30 p.m.

With less than a week before the election filing deadline, more candidates are making their intentions known, including incumbent USD 383 School Board member David Colburn. As of January 1st, the new state statute eliminating the mortgage registration fee went into effect.  Even just a few weeks into the new year, Riley County Register of Deeds, Debbie Regester said they have already noticed a difference in revenues. During Thursday’s county commission meeting, Regester commented, “it’s going to be a significant hit”. Edie submitted his paperwork to the Riley County Clerk’s office late Wednesday, Jan. 21. “It’s been an honor to be a part of the district for the past 3 and a half years, and my hope is to continue on that for the next 4 years,” said Edie in a phone interview on Thursday. WASHINGTON (AP) President Barack Obama is in Lawrence to sell the economic proposals he outlined in his State of the Union address. That follows a visit to Idaho, which is also considered conservative-leaning and a state that typically backs Republicans. . Board members expressed concern with viewing the budget reduction planning numbers, as they knew the news would not be good. Business and Finance Director, Lew Faust stated there are still “lots of unknowns at this point”, and the numbers are just projected estimates.  He added, the numbers could change many times over the coming months. Faust estimated the projected local impact on the state budget reductions for the coming school year will be around $1,755,000.
