The Wamego City Commission approved a funding proposal for adding a Convention and Visitors Bureau  Coordinator. At Tuesday’s meeting, City Manager Merl Page set the stage for the proposal from the Wamego Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Megan Umscheid, and board members Jason Moore, Jeff Wick, Chris Hupe and Lance White. The Riley County Police Department and the Kansas State University Police Department have received several complaints regarding possible scams in the Manhattan and Riley County Area. These scams are carried out over the phone or via postcard and request that the potential victim supply personal or financial information. RCPD would like to remind the community to question suspicious correspondences to protect their personal information. The individuals committing these scams are using the Riley County Police Department name on caller identification services and they state that potential victims are under an IRS investigation, owe for tuition or educational services, or have been listed on a…

K-State’s Katie Brand and Kylee Zumach were both named honorable mention All-Americans by the American Volleyball Coaches Association after helping lead the Wildcats back to the NCAA tournament this year. They are just the seventh and eighth Wildcats to ever be named AVCA All-Americans, and Zumach is the first freshman to garner the honor. Zumach is also a finalist for the AVCA Freshman of the Year award. Brand is just the second K-State setter in school history to earn All-American honors, joining Gabby Guerre who was an honorable mention selection in 2003. WalletHub recently released a list of the best and worst college cities and towns in America for 2014. Manhattan ranked 12th on the list. Two other Big 12 colleges ranked above K-State:  Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa ranked 11th and Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma ranked 8th. Lawrence ranked 44th on the list. The Manhattan City Commission revisited its appointments to the Riley County Law Board, Tuesday. During the last legislative meeting Mayor, Wynn Butler announced his slate of recommendations which included local resident, Craig Beardsley. Butler believes Beardsley offers a strong list of  qualifications which would be an asset to the Law Board. Butler’s slate did not include Mayor Pro Tem , Karen McCulloh; and After expressing concern with a citizen serving on the board, the Commission rejected Butler’s slate and instead voted to fill all positions with elected officials. Manhattan high basketball stays perfect on Tuesday night at the MHS gym, sweeping the Great Bend Panthers. Led by 17 points from sophomore Gigi McAtee, the MHS girls ran its record to 3-0 with a strong second half effort to beat the Lady Panthers 72-57. Joining McAtee in double figures was seniors Savannah Roberts and Caroline Ballard with 14 and 10 points respectively. Nine players overall reach the scorers book for the Indians. Benji George is still perfect in his first season as the head coach for the MHS boys, the Indians runaway with a 61-45 win over the Panthers.…
