TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A new Kansas revenue forecast says the state will face a $279 million budget shortfall by July and an even bigger gap to close in the year after that. State officials released a new financial forecast Monday that revised the state’s revenue projections for budget year that began in July. The Kansas Highway Patrol responded to an injury accident Monday afternoon on I-70 near mile marker 315, just 12 miles from Manhattan. According to a report from the KHP, Melanie Stubbs (22) of Manhattan fell asleep at the wheel of her 2011 Nissan Rogue. Her vehicle drifted left off the roadway, striking a cross-over, which launched it into the air before coming to a rest on its hood in the median. Kaleb Dugan (22) and Kristian Dugan (2) both of Manhattan, were listed as passengers in the vehicle. After entering a plea Monday afternoon, the Leonardville man charged in connection with an accident in October of last year that left a teenager dead will not endure a jury trial. Garret Olson (22) was charged with involuntary manslaughter and failure to stop at the scene of an accident, after an incident that left Trevor Redding (17) dead. A blood test proved Olson had alcohol in his system, well over the legal limit. Olson appeared in Riley County District Court, and plead to involuntary manslaughter.

Votes were counted and publicized during last week’s general election, but the results are never truly official until the canvass. The Riley County 2014 general election canvass was held during Monday’s county commission meeting. County Clerk, Rich Vargo provided some comments about this year’s voter turnout. Although turnout seemed high, Riley County’s transit community contributes to a low percentage of voter turnout for the county. Chi (Barry) Zhang will travel to Fargo, ND, in January to compete as a Division Finalist in the Junior Piano Competition. Zhang, the son of Tingting Song and Xin Zhang, earned this opportunity after winning the Kansas State MTNA-Junior Piano competition. A 9th grader at Manhattan High School, Zhang has been studying piano for 9 years and is currently a student of Dr. Jack Winerock and Dr. Slawomir Dobrzanski. Pottawatomie County vote totals are now official. County Clerk Nancy McCarter says the vote canvass took a little over an hour but it went well and she was especially pleased with the number of voters who cast their ballots. 58% of registered voters participated in last week’s mid-term election. McCarter says she thinks that’s the highest governor election turnout her county has ever had. There were 201 provisionals which is higher than usual, but McCarter says that was expected.
