TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas says its tax collections in October fell $23 million short of expectations. The state Department of Revenue reported Friday that the state had collected $417 million in taxes, or 5.2 percent less than the $440 million anticipated. Since the start of the current fiscal year in July, tax collections have been nearly $47 million less than anticipated, a 2.6 percent shortfall. The state expected to collect more than $1.81 billion in taxes and took in $1.77 billion. Budget Director Shawn Sullivan called the yearlong shortfall “manageable” and said Gov. Those attending Thursday’s Great Plains Radio History Symposium at K-State probably felt like they’d taken a trip back in time, with memories of Kansas City’s battleground involving WHB and KUDL. Symposium co-founder Dave McFarland was pleased with the turnout at Hale Library. McFarland adds competition sometimes makes one better–and this is what happened during the ’50’s and ’60’s. The Thursday morning session dealt with the birth of Top 40 radio, featuring WHB and KUDL in Kansas City. The MHS boys cross country team competed Friday morning at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence for the 2014 State Championships. The Indians brought home the top two places with Jackson Schroeder and Michael Melgares. Schroeder finished in first place, four seconds better than his counter part Melgares. Melgares had a tight finish with second and third place finishing a tenth of a second better than the third place finisher. Other notable finishes for the Indians: Isaiah Koppes (27th), Copper Schroeder (40th), Samuel Morgan (60th), Peter Gruenbacher (68th) and Alejandro Martinez (73rd).
