180 local girl scouts traveled to 14 different countries on Saturday morning. Well….at least with their imaginations. World Thinking Day was celebrated by area girl scouts at St. Thomas More Catholic Church here in Manhattan, although the official holiday is on February 22nd. The day is designed to provide girls with the chance to think and learn about scouts in other countries. Each troop picked a different country to research and present on. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas collected $22 million more in taxes than expected this month. The Department of Revenue reported yesterday that the state collected almost $310 million in taxes in February, when it anticipated taking in $287 million. The numbers are good news for Republican Governor Sam Brownback and legislators, but they don’t solve the state’s budget problems.

Manhattan High basketball closed out the regular season in grand fashion on Friday night at the MHS gym with a sweep over the Seaman Vikings. The MHS girls closed out the regular season with a 49-39 win over the Lady Vikes that gave the Lady Indians a share of the Centennial League title with Washburn Rural. Russia’s Interior Ministry says Boris Nemtsov, a leading opposition figure and former deputy prime minister, has been shot and killed near the Kremlin. Nemtsov, a sharp critic of President Vladimir Putin, was killed early Saturday. His death comes just a day before a major opposition rally in Moscow.

A gunman killed seven people and wounded an eighth person in an overnight house-to-house rampage in the small town in the Missouri Ozarks before apparently committing suicide in a vehicle, authorities said Friday. The victims were found in four homes in Tyrone, about 40 miles north of the Arkansas line. The 36-year-old gunman was discovered in a neighboring county, dead of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Missouri Highway Patrol Sgt. Jeff Kinder said.
