Incumbent State Representative Ron Highland of Wamego has filed for re-election to the 51st District position. Highland’s name is on the Kansas Secretary of State list for this year’s election. So far no one else has officially filed for the position.

Five Kansas Schools, including Ogden Elementary School have been nominated for the 2014 National Blue Ribbon (NBR) Schools Award Program. The U.S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, will invite these schools to apply for the award. The final selection of the NBR Award will be made in September of 2014, and will be honored at a recognition ceremony in the nation’s capital. Schools nominated were Oatville Elementary from Wichita, Valley Falls Elementary from Valley Falls, West Bourbon Elementary School from Uniontown, Marais Des Cygnes Valley Elementary from Marais Des Cygnes Valley, and Ogden Elementary. A short Riley County Commission meeting, with only two staff updates and an administrative work session, left plenty of time to discuss legislative concerns. During the commission comments portion of Thursday’s meeting, commissioners expressed concern with legislators.  Senate Bill 298, which involves the elimination of the mortgage registration fee, is on it’s way to the floor.  For commissioners, this is particularly frustrating as they specifically went to Topeka to provide testimony against the bill. Manhattan Finance Director, Bernie Hayen called the February sales tax results “nothing but good news”. $953,328 were collected in sales tax receipts, for the city of Manhattan, this month.  This is up from last year’s February collections of $887,230.  This is a 4.7% increase from the net change in year-to-date for 2014 over 2013.  The City of Manhattan had forecasted $904,975 in taxes for the month, so collections were $48,353 above what was expected. TIF, or tax increment finance, taxes are down from this time last year.  In February of 2013, $75,870 were collected, while this month’s taxes only reached…

KMAN received word of a structure fire at 318 Fremont Avenue, just before 10:45 Thursday morning. Firefighters on scene told KMAN’s Cathy Dawes that the cause of the fire was an overheated furnace.  No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

 The more than 23,200 students enrolled at Kansas State University for the spring semester are more diverse than ever before, pushing spring enrollment to a record high. The record enrollment this spring is just one part of the story, said Pat Bosco, vice president for student life and dean of students.
