After two snow days, Riley County District Courts were opened again Thursday and the Levertis Horne trial could finally resume. Horne is accused in the home invasion case back in October of 2012. He faces two count of aggravated robbery, two counts of attempted aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary and aggravated battery. During this incident, authorities said a K-State student was shot in the upper torso. This is Horne’s second trial, as the first concluded with a hung jury. Licensing fees for Riley County childcare providers appear to be rather low, when comparing them to surrounding counties. Riley County Health Department Child Care Licensing Surveyor, Breva Spencer shared the results from her research during Thursday’s county commission meeting. The $35 fee was the lowest out of all the counties she researched, which included- Douglas, Pottawatomie, Wyandotte, and Sedgwick. Around 129 child care providers are located within Riley County. Spencer also took the time to express the high need for infant care. Many local providers do not provide care for infants, as this lessens the amount of children they can…
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) A Kansas native who currently works at Kansas State will have a front-row seat at the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics. Bryan Pinkall is one of only two Americans on a 250-person team that is producing the opening ceremonies, which air Friday evening. He’s managing production operations and directing for part of the ceremony, and is one of several music directors. The 28-year-old Pinkall is a native of Great Bend and currently is a voice instructor at Kansas State University. He graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Conservatory of Music and Dance last year. The…
Manhattan sales tax receipts were up for the January reporting period when compared to a year ago. Neary $900,991 was collected in the time period which actually reflects November and early December sales. That’s compared to about $887,865 collected this same time last year. Manhattan Finance Director Bernie Hayen says equally as important, sales tax revenues within the Downtown Redevelopment District were also up, with a dollar amount of $67,482 compared to $53,408 a year ago. Riley County Police report a couple of arrests of note Wednesday. Police arrested Bryce Dreckman, 26, of Coralville, Iowa on three warrants with the offenses of failure to appear. The original offenses for these warrants were two counts of driving while suspended, expired tag or vehicle not registered. Dreckman was confined and later released on $11,000 bond. He was arrested Wednesday afternoon at approximately 4:35 while at the Riley County Police Department. And April Friesen, 21, of Norman, Oklahoma was arrested Wednesday afternoon for a warrant listing three offenses of forgery and theft by deception. She was arrested while at the police department…
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The State Board of Education will review a recent study of Kansas elementary and middle school students linking fitness to academic success. The results of the Kansas Fitness Information Tracking, or K-FIT, showed that students who were able to reach fitness goals in five areas scored significantly higher on math and reading tests than students who weren’t fit. The state board will review the study on Feb. 11 at its monthly meeting in Topeka. The study, funded through the Kansas Health Foundation, compared the fitness results of 13,000 students in grade four through nine with those students’…
COLWICH, Kan. (AP) A suburban Wichita man is accused of pointing a shotgun at a FedEx driver who delivered a package to the wrong house. The Sedgwick County sheriff’s office says the incident happened around noon Tuesday near Colwich, in the northwestern part of the county. The driver told deputies he had just left the package at a home when a man opened the door, pointed a shotgun at him and told him to come and take it away. The driver obeyed, then called 911. Deputies arrested the 71-year-old man and booked him into jail on suspicion of aggravated assault.…
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas residents began the slow process of digging out from a thick blanket of snow, leaving behind closed schools, slick streets and bitter temperatures. The snow had stopped falling by early Wednesday as the storm moved toward the New England states. The National Weather Service said snowfall totals included 9 inches in Wichita and more than a foot in Topeka and surrounding cities. Temperatures for Wednesday were forecast to stay under 10 degrees for much of the state, accompanied by wind chills well below zero. Gov. Sam Brownback, who took to a snow plow during the storm…
