Gov. Sam Brownback has declared a State of Disaster Emergency for all of Kansas in response to the major winter storm moving through the state. The declaration authorizes state resources to assist communities affected by the winter storm still moving across Kansas. “As predicted and expected, snow has been blanketing the state for several hours causing deteriorating travel conditions,” said Brownback. “I want to continue to urge everyone to avoid travel unless it is absolutely essential.” The Kansas Highway Patrol is attributing two deaths in a Crawford County vehicle accident to weather conditions. UPDATE AT 9:45 p.m.: NOW OPEN! As of 9:40 p.m. tonight, February 4, 2014, all lanes of eastbound I-70 east of MacVicar Avenue NOW OPEN to all traffic. The diesel fuel spill (approximately 180 gallons) cleanup has been completed and the damaged semi truck and KDOT snowplow have been removed from the roadway. The 2014 Farm Bill after much haggling and many votes is on its way to President Obama’s desk for signature after passing the U.S. Senate Tuesday on a 68-32 vote. The bill had earlier been passed by the House of Representatives. Manhattan and the surrounding areas sent out road crews to begin combating the snowfall. Pottawatomie County Emergency Management Director, Chris Trudo told KMAN  that his crews will be working throughout this predicament. The Junction City Police Department reminds citizens during weather conditions where numerous accidents occur, the police department can be overwhelmed by calls for service involving minor accidents. Chief Tim Brown says the emergency snow procedure has been initiated, which means: The Junction City Police Department will not respond to non-injury accidents under $1,000. Drivers should move to a place of safety and then exchange insurance information and report the accident to their insurance company as soon as possible. All local schools, including Kansas State University, announced Monday that there would be no school on Tuesday. According to Riley County Public Information Officer, Mat Droge, the police department definitely does not have a snow day. Two minor accidents occurred Tuesday morning, due to the winter weather, and the department assisted four motorists who got stuck on the roads.  In order to avoid accidents, Droge suggests increasing the following distance between you and other vehicles.
