U-S Congressman Tim Huelskamp of Kansas wasn’t too surprised by the Presidents State of the Union address Tuesday night. Huelskamp tells KMAN “Things are not good in the State of the Union. It’s not working very well. 24 million Americans are looking for a full-time job since he took office. Another 6.5 million Americans are in poverty.” Huelskamp adds the President gave us many of the same proposals. The Representative says he was looking for something different such as less regulation and less government, encouraging some entrepreneurs, and to move forward. And the Congressman says, “Actually the policies are going…
The Riley County Police Department has received information about an attempted potential scam in the area. This “Apartment Scam” reported Tuesday involves an unknown scammer sending information about approval on an apartment or home lease. In the scammer’s correspondence, they ask for a deposit to be mailed or wired with the promise of mailing keys to the victim afterward. The Riley County Police Department reminds the community to be mindful of this and other scams and not release funds or information to persons you cannot identify. When receiving emails or documents, spelling errors and improper grammar could be a sign…
WACO, Texas (AP) Juwan Staten made a reverse layup with 3.1 seconds left and West Virginia held on to beat Baylor 66-64 on Tuesday night. The Mountaineers (12-9, 4-4 Big 12) had gone nearly 5 minutes without scoring, blowing an eight-point lead in the process, before Staten drove the baseline and under the basket before making the game-winning shot. He finished with a game-high 15 points and nine assists. Kenny Chery banked in what would have been a game-winning 3-pointer for Baylor (13-7, 1-6), but it came after the buzzer sounded. Officials looked at replay to confirm that he…
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas legislators are wrestling with whether they should attempt to limit electronic surveillance and data-mining by state and local government agencies. The House Judiciary Committee held a hearing Tuesday on a bill described by sponsoring Republican Rep. Brett Hildabrand of Shawnee as an effort to curb domestic spying. The panel took no action. The measure would limit state and local agencies’ access to records held by a third party, such as cellphone or electronic banking data. The agency would have to obtain a warrant or get an individual’s consent to access such data. But several law enforcement…
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A bill has been introduced in the Kansas Senate that would alter the way school districts receive additional funding related to capital improvements approved by local voters. The legislation proposed Monday would change the way districts receive state funds to compensate for low overall district wealth. Senate Vice President Jeff King says his proposal would divert state aid that would have been used by districts to repay bonds issued for construction. The intent is to lower local property taxes and provide additional funds to poor districts to provide for instruction and other classroom expenses. The change would…
Rarely-used snowplows have been getting a workout in parts of the Deep South, which is blanketed by up to 3 inches of snow in some areas.
Will the snowy New York City area really reap an estimated $600 million economic boost from the Super Bowl? Probably not. Despite lofty predictions, sports economists say the financial impact of the Super Bowl could fall far below expectations.
Comments from members of the Kansas Congressional delegation representing the Manhattan area are less than complimentary of the President’s state of the Union address. Senator Jerry Moran of Manhattan: “Tonight, Americans heard President Obama’s latest pitch for the same failed policies we’ve dealt with for five years: higher taxes, overregulation and irresponsible spending. Five years into the Washington Democrats’ economy, there are 10.4 million Americans unemployed, the labor force participation rate has plunged to its lowest level in nearly 40 years, median household income has fallen each year, and one in four part-time workers are living below the poverty line.…
